Celebrating the First Online Event for Female Seafarers on International Maritime Women's Day

Celebrating Women at Sea: The First Online Event for Female Seafarers

In honor of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) International Maritime Women's Day, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) held its inaugural online event for female seafarers on May 16. This event was timed just ahead of the widely recognized day on May 18, which is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women in the maritime industry.

The primary aim of the event was to acknowledge the contributions made by female seafarers while fostering a deeper understanding of their working environment and the challenges they face. Participants included MOL's female seafarers, cadets, and shore staff, totaling 70 representatives from the MOL group. Leading the celebration was Captain Matsushita, MOL’s first female ship captain within Japan’s comprehensive shipping companies.

During the event, a dynamic talk session enabled participants to share their backgrounds and experiences in pursuing maritime careers. These discussions provided valuable insights into the aspirations and realities of women in the seafaring profession, emphasizing the importance of creating a supportive workplace atmosphere.

MOL has been actively working to improve the working conditions for female crew members. Initiatives include pre-boarding briefings, mental health support, and the provision of sanitary products to enhance living environments on board. The company is committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to work towards a common goal of empowering female seafarers.

The MOL group views diversity, equity, and inclusion—including the promotion of women's participation—as a driving force for new growth. This focus is integral to the company's 'Human Capital Vision,' which has also earned MOL recognition as one of the 'Nadeshiko Brand' companies for five consecutive years. Additionally, MOL has maintained its selection in the MSCI Japan Women's Empowerment Index (WIN) for two years in a row, showcasing its commitment to enhancing the role of women in maritime.

The recognition of International Maritime Women's Day occurs as the maritime sector strives for greater diversity. The IMF confirmed this day as a means to boost the recruitment and retention of women in the maritime industry. The IMO aims to address the current gender imbalance by promoting increased visibility and opportunities for women in this traditionally male-dominated field.

MOL remains dedicated to fostering an environment where female seafarers can thrive. By combining diverse talents, experiences, and capacities, the company aims to enhance its sustained corporate value and contribute to a more equitable maritime industry.
