Final Chance for Communities to Apply for PG&E Resilience Hubs Grants
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has announced the last opportunity for organizations to apply for its Resilience Hubs Grant program. This initiative offers a total funding pool of $400,000 aimed at enhancing local communities' ability to respond to climate and disaster challenges.
The program is specifically designed for governmental entities, educational institutions, or 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations dedicated to bolstering community resilience. Applicants can submit proposals until January 31, 2025, with grant recipients announced in the spring. This funding marks the culmination of PG&E's resilience efforts, set to conclude after the 2025 grants are allocated.
The Resilience Hubs Grant program encourages the establishment of physical spaces that serve as vital resources during climate-driven disruptions—such as wildfires and power outages—allowing communities access to power, shelter, and critical information. The hubs are envisioned not only as emergency resources but also as year-round community centers that can facilitate ongoing local engagement and support.
Previous grant recipients, such as the city of Richmond, have successfully turned these funds into tangible community benefits. Richmond utilized its grant to create a renewable energy-powered space that provides shaded environments, electricity, and essential local resources, particularly for vulnerable populations during extreme weather events. This initiative stands as a testament to the positive impact the Resilience Hubs can have on communities.
The funding structure for the 2025 grants will see PG&E awarding four grants of $25,000 each (totaling $100,000) and three larger grants of $100,000 each (totaling $300,000). The funding for these grants is sourced from PG&E Corporation shareholders, emphasizing the company's commitment to investing in wildfire resilience and effective response mechanisms, as mandated by the California Public Utilities Commission.
Carla Peterman, PG&E's Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Chief Sustainability Officer, highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in building climate resilience. “It requires a collective approach to protect our communities from the impacts of climate change. We aim to think globally while acting locally, empowering communities to develop innovative, sustainable, and equitable solutions. These locally-driven strategies not only benefit our current communities but are also replicable in others,” she stated.
As projects will prioritize the needs of disadvantaged and vulnerable groups, PG&E encourages applicants to explore strategies interconnected with local needs and solutions that arise from community engagement. Furthermore, the strategies and solutions developed through these grants will be shared publicly to facilitate partnerships across various communities and regions.
Proposals may include feasibility studies to assess the local requirements for resilience hubs, as well as design and planning for physical locations dedicated to community safety. Furthermore, mobile resources or upgrades to existing structures to improve resilience can also be viable components of proposed projects.
Those interested in submitting an application can view the past recipients and the awarded projects through PG&E's official channels. The application deadline is fast approaching, and those who wish to make a meaningful impact on their communities are encouraged to act quickly.
