BayCare's New Philanthropic Direction
In a groundbreaking move, BayCare Health System has announced the appointment of Kate Sawa as its first Chief Philanthropy Officer. This strategic decision aims to strengthen the organization’s philanthropic capacity, positioning it to better serve the healthcare needs of West Central Florida. This initiative reflects BayCare's commitment to enhancing community health services through robust partnerships and fundraising efforts.
A Leader with Vision
Sawa, who will retain her role as president of the St. Joseph's Hospitals Foundation, brings a wealth of experience and passion to this new position. Her leadership journey began with the creation of a nonprofit organization inspired by her sister, who has Down syndrome. This personal motivation has fueled her professional endeavors, culminating in significant roles such as the local executive director of the American Heart Association. Since taking charge of the St. Joseph's Hospitals Foundation in 2021, Sawa has already made a notable impact, particularly in spearheading a campaign for a new freestanding facility for St. Joseph's Children's Hospital.
Strengthening Community Ties
Under Sawa's guidance, the St. Joseph's Hospitals Foundation secured a remarkable $50 million gift that will contribute to the upcoming Pagidipati Children's Hospital at St. Joseph's, further emphasizing BayCare's dedication to pediatric care in the region. The new hospital facility, set to open in 2030, represents a significant advancement in healthcare services for children in West Central Florida.
Stephanie Conners, president and CEO of BayCare, highlighted the importance of community collaboration in enhancing healthcare. "Families across West Central Florida need access to excellent healthcare close to home, and our generous donors and community partners help make that possible," she stated. Conners expressed confidence that Sawa's authentic leadership will foster the necessary partnerships to achieve enduring community impact.
Collaboration Across Foundations
Sawa's expanded role includes collaboration with several other community-driven foundations, such as the Morton Plant Mease Foundation and the St. Anthony's Hospital Foundation. Each of these organizations maintains its own independence while working towards a common goal of improving healthcare services in the area. This collaborative approach underscores the rich history of community philanthropy that BayCare embodies.
Personal and Professional Dedication
BayCare’s Chief Operating Officer, Kimberly Guy, praised Sawa for her unwavering dedication and insight into community needs. "Kate's passion for service and her deep understanding of our community's needs have already made a lasting difference at St. Joseph's," Guy remarked. This sentiment echoes across the organization as Sawa prepares to deepen the legacy of compassionate and high-quality healthcare in the region.
Sawa, a University of Florida graduate, resides in St. Petersburg with her husband and their four children. Her personal background and professional dedication to service uniquely position her to lead BayCare's philanthropic strategies moving forward.
