Enhancing Understanding of Dementia through Local Engagements in Shibuya's Hachi-san Po Program

Engaging with Dementia Awareness in Shibuya through Hachi-san Po

In September, aligning with Dementia Month, Besspla Corporation, based in Shibuya, Tokyo, is excited to highlight the Hachi-san Po initiative. The program will coincide with Shibuya City's upcoming "SHIBUYA 100-Year Life WEEK," scheduled from September 9 to 12, 2026. During this week, residents can participate in events such as the "Dementia Awareness Exhibition" and the "Frailty Prevention Fair," earning 100 Hachi-san Po points upon participation. This initiative serves to deepen understanding of dementia while promoting healthy activities and local shopping.

Upcoming Events Between September 9 - 12

The "Dementia Awareness Exhibition" will take place from September 9 (Wednesday) to September 11 (Friday), 11:00 AM to 4:30 PM (until 4:00 PM on the 11th), while the "Frailty Prevention Fair" is scheduled for September 12 (Saturday) from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Both events will be held at the Shibuya City Hall on the 1st and 14th floors and are open to all residents, workers, and students within the district. Attendees can deepen their understanding of health promotion and dementia through lectures, hands-on experiences, and consultation booths. No reservation is needed for the consultation booths of the Dementia Awareness Exhibition, but earlier applications for reserved programs have already ceased. For participation methods on the day, please check the special event websites.

Engaging Health Activities with Hachi Pay

The Hachi-san Po program is designed for Shibuya residents aged 60 and above. Participants are required to download Besspla's "Brain-Healthy App," create an account, and register for Hachi-san Po. Points can be accumulated through various activities such as achieving walking goals and participating in designated courses and events. These accumulated points can then be exchanged for Hachi Pay, the district's digital local currency. It’s essential to note that the criteria for event participation and Hachi-san Po accumulation differ, requiring adherence to Hachi-san Po usage conditions to earn points.

Support Available at the Local Smartphone Salon

Shibuya's smartphone salon offers a supportive environment where residents can seek digital assistance from experts or interact with fellow participants. Accessible to all district residents without reservation, this salon welcomes both smartphone owners and those who don't yet own one. Engagement at the salon also qualifies for additional point accumulation within the Hachi-san Po program. Having nearby resources allows individuals to tackle any challenges they face while integrating digital tools into their daily lives.

Promoting Understanding of Dementia, Health, and Community

The district plays an active role in disseminating information for those grappling with dementia concerns, providing centralized resources via the "Shibuya Dementia Navigation" platform that caters to those diagnosed with dementia and their families and supporters. As the provider of the application utilized in Hachi-san Po, Besspla aims to reinforce the structure that supports continual engagement in healthy activities while supplementing local efforts to enhance understanding and dialogue surrounding dementia. In September, as we explore living authentically within the community amid dementia, it's imperative to share learning spaces, avenues for consultation, and the joys of venturing into the city as accessible experiences.
