TalentLMS Survey Highlights Employee Protection Gaps in Workplaces

TalentLMS Survey: Understanding Employee Protection at Work

In a recent study conducted by TalentLMS, a prominent employee training platform, alarming gaps were uncovered regarding employees' perceptions of safety in the workplace. The survey, encompassing 1,000 individuals across the United States, indicated a troubling trend whereby although 71% of respondents felt secure at work, their personal experiences told a different story.

The Prevalence of Workplace Misconduct

The survey revealed that workplace misconduct is indeed rampant. A significant 36% of participants reported having witnessed incidents of incivility or disrespect, while 33% admitted to experiencing such behavior themselves. Additionally, 29% of employees noted they had witnessed social exclusion, with 24% reporting personal experiences of being left out. Perhaps most concerning was the revelation that 25% of witnesses of misconduct, along with 21% of those affected, faced retaliation for speaking out.

These figures illuminate an essential link between employee safety and job retention. A staggering 77% of respondents stated they would contemplate leaving their job if they felt insecure, making it evident that workplace cultures centered around safety must be prioritized to maintain talent.

Unequal Accountability: A Dire Concern

A critical finding in the survey pointed to unequal accountability as a significant contributor to employees' fears. Nearly 62% affirmed that misconduct is often disregarded when it involves high-performing individuals or those in leadership roles. Strikingly, 45% observed that people who mistreat others are nonetheless promoted, which creates a culture of mistrust. Moreover, a worrying 47% claimed that management discourages reporting harassment or discrimination, while 42% expressed fears that voicing concerns could lead them to be labeled as troublemakers.

Despite widespread misconduct, many employees choose not to report incidents. The primary reasons are a belief that reporting would be futile (cited by 56%) and fear of possible retaliation (36%). This culture of silence significantly undermines efforts to foster a healthier work environment.

The Role of Compliance Training

TalentLMS underscores the importance of training as a tool for cultivating trust and encouraging positive behavior. A notable 60% of participants acknowledged that compliance training had contributed to improved workplace behavior. However, many expressed that the training programs often did not reflect the true situations employees encounter. About 45% found the compliance training to lack relevance to their daily operations, while 36% called for more practical training focused on realistic scenarios.

Access to training also varies widely; one in five employees reported not having received any compliance training in the past year, with only 33% having participated in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts. More concerning is the fact that 31% claimed they felt less secure due to the company scaling back on DEI initiatives.

Theoni Velkou, Compliance Manager and Data Protection Officer at TalentLMS, remarked, "Training influences how employees respond to situations they face at work. When compliance training reflects real workplace scenarios, it helps individuals recognize misconduct and feel safer when speaking up. Practical training fosters enhanced trust throughout the organization."

Conclusion

The findings from the TalentLMS survey spotlight critical gaps in employee safety and compliance preparedness within organizations. To combat these issues, TalentLMS promotes its U.S. HR Compliance Bundle in collaboration with EasyLlama, aimed at supporting organizations in mitigating risks and strengthening workplace environments. As companies work toward more effective frameworks addressing these challenges, fostering a culture of open dialogue and equitable accountability will be essential for enhancing employee protections.
