Superior HealthPlan Empowers Texans for Back-to-School
Texas has witnessed a stirring initiative as Superior HealthPlan undertook a remarkable project to assist students gearing up for the new school year. Participating in 88 community events across the state, Superior HealthPlan provided vital support to students and their families, reaching approximately 45,000 people. This initiative is part of their commitment to ensuring that the beginning of the school year is filled with joy rather than anxiety.
Superior HealthPlan, a prominent managed care organization within the state, allocated over $32,000 to facilitate these events in various communities throughout Texas. The events not only provided essential resources like school supplies but also included health checkups to ensure students are medically prepared for the challenges of the academic year.
Community Engagement
One of the standout events was the 24th Annual Wellness Fair held in Uvalde, where around 3,000 attendees turned out to benefit from the offerings. Hosted at the newly inaugurated Community Health Development, Inc. (CHDI) multi-purpose center—a facility partly funded by Superior HealthPlan and the Centene Foundation—the fair was notable for providing a wide range of resources, including backpacks, school supplies, new athletic shoes, clothing, and even haircuts. Vaccinations and health checkups were also featured to further support student readiness.
Dr. Susan Mills, who serves as the Senior Vice President of Population Health and Clinical Operations at Superior HealthPlan, highlighted the essential nature of such community support. "The beginning of a school year should be filled with excitement, not anxiety. By supporting these events, Superior is helping families access the care and resources they need to start the year strong – physically, emotionally, and academically,” she remarked.
Expansive Outreach
The outreach of this initiative spanned several communities throughout Texas, including places like Austin, Dallas, Brownsville, San Antonio, and El Paso, among many others. Through collaboration with local organizations, Superior HealthPlan ensured a diverse range of services was available to all students attending the events. Each community event acted as a hub of support, aiming to lift the spirits of both students and parents alike during what can often be a stressful time.
Mayela Castañon, CEO of CHDI, expressed her gratitude for Superior's contributions and their impact. "Thanks, in part, to support from Superior HealthPlan, we were able to offer essential items and services to help students get ready for the school year and to ease some of the concerns parents typically face,” she stated.

With more than 25 years of experience in providing high-quality health care to Texans, Superior HealthPlan prides itself on its impact within local communities.
