Human Academy Japanese School Creates a Volunteer Circle
On October 15, 2025, Human Academy Japanese School in Tokyo held a founding ceremony for its new volunteer circle, aimed at fostering community coexistence. This initiative is particularly timely, as the number of foreign residents in Japan has reached a record high of over 3.3 million. The goal of the volunteer circle is to encourage international students to actively participate in community safety, cleanliness, and exchange initiatives, thereby enhancing their adaptability to Japanese society and deepening mutual understanding with the local community.
During the ceremony, the school was awarded a certificate designating it as a "Model School for Volunteer Crime Prevention" by the Totsuka Police Station, in collaboration with the Shinjuku Ward Crisis Management Department. This marks the official launch of the first community volunteer organization for foreigners in the district. Following the ceremony, 26 foreign students from the school collaborated with local volunteers in a campaign at Takadanobaba Station, distributing flyers and pocket tissues while raising awareness about safety in the area.
Key Highlights of the Initiative
- - The establishment of the Human Academy Japanese School Volunteer Circle has now been officially recognized.
- - The school has partnered with Totsuka Police Station and Shinjuku Ward’s Crisis Management Department to implement activities focused on crime prevention, community cleaning, and educational outreach.
- - This initiative is part of the school’s broader commitment to provide practical education that complements language learning and fosters a sense of community engagement among students.
Context of the Initiative
In recent years, the integration of foreign residents into Japanese society has become increasingly vital. However, cultural and lifestyle differences often create "invisible walls" between local communities and foreign residents. The Human Academy Japanese School emphasizes not only the importance of language skills but also the ability to thrive within society through collaborative efforts. The establishment of the volunteer circle represents a concrete step towards building such connections, utilizing the model created by Totsuka Police Station as a guide.
During the founding ceremony, 26 students participated alongside the Totsuka Police Chief, Hasegawa, and Crisis Management Department representative, Miyano. They received the model school designation and volunteer materials. Chief Hasegawa expressed confidence in the contributions of international students, emphasizing their role in enhancing community safety. Miyano echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of youth awareness in fostering a safe community.
Additionally, Miyagawa, the principal at Human Academy, remarked that international students' engagement in local activities leads to genuine global understanding. He encouraged students to embrace this opportunity as a way to appreciate the significance of learning in Japan and cultivate pride in their role as community members.
First Activity at Takadanobaba Station
Shortly after the founding ceremony, the students commenced their first activity at Takadanobaba Station. Given that the event coincided with a pension distribution day—a time when scams targeting the elderly typically increase—the volunteers conducted a special awareness campaign against these crimes. With guidance from Totsuka Police Station and collaboration with other local volunteer groups, they distributed flyers and tissues to pedestrians while promoting heightened crime awareness among the community.
Ongoing Initiatives
Moving forward, the Human Academy Japanese School plans to maintain its collaboration with community organizations, focusing on three main pillars:
1. Crime prevention and traffic safety awareness campaigns
2. Community cleaning and beautification efforts
3. Events supporting the elderly and promoting community interaction
Through these activities, the school aims to enable students to utilize their Japanese language skills practically while strengthening trust within the community and embodying the ideal of multicultural coexistence.
