Gina M. DiNardo Appointed as President and CEO of the American Kennel Club
The American Kennel Club (AKC) has recently announced a significant leadership change, appointing Gina M. DiNardo as the new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective April 1, 2025. This change comes as the organization aims to reinforce its dedication to the advocacy for purebred dogs and responsible dog ownership while ensuring a smooth transition from the previous administration.
Dr. Thomas Davies, Chairman of the AKC Board of Directors, expressed gratitude for the contributions of outgoing CEO Dennis Sprung, highlighting DiNardo's capabilities and experience in guiding the organization into its next chapter. "We are deeply grateful for Dennis Sprung's decades of contributions to the AKC and wish him success," Dr. Davies remarked. "We are also confident that Gina will provide steady leadership and uphold the values that have made the AKC the trusted authority on breeds and all things dog."
Gina DiNardo is no stranger to the AKC, having an impressive background in the field of purebred dogs. With over 50 years of experience as both a breeder and an owner-handler, DiNardo has held various positions within the organization since her hire in 1995. Initially starting in the Event Plans department, she showcased her versatility and dedication, eventually taking on roles in Publications, Communications, and Executive Leadership.
In 2008, she ascended to the position of Vice President and Assistant Executive Secretary, and since 2017, the AKC Board has recognized her as Executive Secretary. Her responsibilities have included overseeing vital departments such as AKC Meet the Breeds, Communications, Government Relations, and Marketing. She is also known for her active role in the AKC National Championship Show Committee and as a spokesperson for the organization.
Academically, DiNardo holds a bachelor's degree in English and Philosophy from Skidmore College, master's level coursework in Genetics, and has completed the prestigious Wharton’s Advanced Management Program. Furthermore, she is a member of several clubs dedicated to specific dog breeds, which reflects her commitment and passion for dogs.
Alongside DiNardo's promotion, Sheila Goffe has been appointed as the new Executive Secretary, effective the same day. Goffe, who has been with the AKC since 2006, will continue to lead the AKC's public policy efforts, which focus on protecting the rights of dog owners and promoting responsible dog ownership. With a strong background in legislative analysis and advocacy, Goffe is expected to play a pivotal role in further enhancing the AKC's mission.
As a non-profit organization founded in 1884, the AKC is recognized for maintaining one of the largest registries of purebred dogs globally and overseeing the sport of purebred dogs in the United States. The organization holds more than 26,000 competitions each year, including conformation, obedience, agility, and various other dog sports, enhancing the breeding and ownership experience for dog enthusiasts across the nation.
The AKC continues to strive toward advocating for the integrity of the purebred dog registry while promoting responsible breeding practices. With DiNardo at the helm, supported by Goffe in her new role, the organization anticipates a period of growth and renewed focus on its objectives.
