Expanding Opportunities for Learning Beyond Graduation in Miyagi
On July 27, 2025, a significant event will take place in Sendai, Miyagi, aimed at discussing post-graduation educational opportunities for graduates of special needs schools. Organized by the
Bridge to the Future Association and supported by various local organizations, such as the
Miyagi Learning Workshop Network and
Hop's Forest, this conference promises to be a vital platform for families and stakeholders to explore inclusive learning environments.
The
Nobisuku Izumi Chuo Hall will host the event, featuring a panel discussion with families who have children with developmental disabilities. This dialogue aims to share experiences and thoughts about how to create a learning environment that fosters inclusivity and provides sustainable growth for all young adults with disabilities.
Why is Post-Graduation Learning Essential?
Currently, around 90% of graduates from high school special support education in Miyagi enter the workforce immediately after graduation. However, many parents and young adults express the desire for more learning opportunities—saying they want more time to study before entering the workforce and a chance to connect with their communities during this transition.
In other countries, community colleges and inclusive campus structures are expanding for individuals with disabilities, yet Japan's options remain limited. This conference aims to confront these challenges and become the first step toward creating various learning opportunities that cater to unique needs in Miyagi.
A Message from the Organizers
In the experience of
Masato Hasegawa, the representative director of the Bridge to the Future Association, the immediate employment route taken by the majority of students graduating from special support schools calls for a reevaluation. He advocates for the need to provide these young individuals, including his son, with more extended learning opportunities before they join the workforce. Hasegawa emphasizes that a fulfilling life post-graduation starts with building connections and enjoying an inclusive campus life. While choices may still be limited compared to those without disabilities, they do exist. He hopes the community can come together to explore and develop these educational spaces in Miyagi.

About Masato Hasegawa
Masato Hasegawa has a rich history in supporting individuals with disabilities. Before establishing a social welfare corporation at 31, he worked in various disability facilities in
Fukuoka Prefecture. After grappling with his daughter's future, he founded a “welfare college” in Fukuoka at 52, dedicated to creating an environment for young individuals with intellectual disabilities to continue learning. At 57, he expanded his mission by establishing a company, seeking to offer more opportunities for individuals with disabilities to learn and grow. In 2024, he founded the
Bridge to the Future Association, which runs the
Mirai College across three locations in Fukuoka, Shizuoka, and Chiba, ensuring a safe learning environment for individuals with severe disabilities.
The overarching goal of Hasegawa’s initiatives is to build an inclusive society where everyone can learn at their own pace and live happily. More information can be found on the
