BE OPEN Unveils Winners of Designing Futures 2050 Competition for Sustainable Solutions
The BE OPEN Foundation has announced the winners of its competitive initiative, Designing Futures 2050, aimed at fostering innovative solutions among young creatives. This international contest, which is in its sixth iteration, focuses on achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The foundation's commitment is to inspire students, graduates, and young professionals to utilize their creative talents to address global challenges in sustainability.
Founded in 2019, BE OPEN initiated this contest to raise awareness among young professionals in creative and engineering fields about the pressing need to act on the SDGs. Each year, the competition has generated a wealth of exceptional projects from participants worldwide, promoting the notion that encouraging youth to become leaders of sustainable change is vital for future progress.
Elena Baturina, BE OPEN’s founder, stated, "Over the past six years, we have dedicated ourselves to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals. By organizing international design competitions for students, we gather a remarkable array of well-documented creative projects from around the globe. Year after year, we reaffirm that educating and motivating young people to become change leaders is the most effective way to move forward. Our goal is to create a knowledge base and motivation for youth to face future challenges. By offering opportunities for creative expression, collaboration, and learning, we aim to inspire them to take responsibility for shaping the future."
This year's Designing Futures 2050 competition encouraged participants to apply sustainable principles realistically. It aimed to identify, showcase, and promote creative ideas for a global transition towards sustainable and efficient practices. The challenge engaged young creatives in realigning the SDG agenda with current realities and inspired them to become more actively involved in planning actionable sustainable solutions.
An international jury panel composed of experts in future studies evaluated the top submissions. Among the judges were notable figures such as Professor Jennifer Gidley, a renowned futurist, as well as Victor Vahidi Motti, co-founder of the Alternative Planetary Futures Institute, and several other prominent figures in design and sustainability fields.
This year's winners received substantial grants to further their innovative projects. The first-place prize of €5,000 was awarded to Ajisafe Damilola Ifeoluwa from Nigeria for his project titled Redefining Global Healthcare: Adjusting the SDGs for Scalable Practical Impact. The second-place award, shared by two projects, each received €2,500: Foday David Kamara from Rwanda for Ecovironment: Transforming Plastic Waste into Sustainable Construction Materials, and Adnan Hasyim Wibowo from Indonesia for AGASA: Algae for Sustainable Action Blooming Sustainability through Algae Installation.
The public voting results and an additional award from the BE OPEN Foundation, selected by founder Elena Baturina, will be announced later this month. These initiatives not only support young talent but also aim to cultivate a generation that is engaged in addressing vital environmental issues and bringing innovative ideas to life. Through competitions like Designing Futures 2050, BE OPEN continues to play a pivotal role in promoting sustainability and motivating the creativity of emerging generations to forge a brighter future.
