KIKKOMAN Presents Kibera A-GOAL League 2026 Concludes Its First Leg
The KIKKOMAN Kibera A-GOAL League 2026 has recently celebrated the closing of its first leg. This league, held in Kibera, the largest slum in Africa located in Nairobi, has been an initiative of the general incorporated association A-GOAL since October 2022. As the league enters its fourth season, it has grown tremendously, with the first leg commencing on April 3rd and culminating in an exciting closing ceremony on August 8th, after encompassing a match journey of about four months.
This season saw a record participation of 2,108 boys and girls from 51 clubs, who collectively played an astounding 2,853 matches. Managing such a vast league came with its own set of challenges, including weather conditions that led to match delays and the need to schedule more games due to increased participant numbers. However, through the hard work of the local organizing team and the invaluable support of various companies and supporters, the first leg was executed successfully.
Awards Ceremony for Winning Teams
The Kibera A-GOAL League is divided into five categories: U9, U11, U13, U15 Boys, and U15 Girls. During the closing ceremony on August 8th, the winning teams from each category were recognized for their outstanding performances. Prizes were awarded to the champions, runners-up, and third-place teams, along with accolades for the Best Player and Best Coach of each category. The joy of the children's smiles was evident during the ceremony as they received medals and trophies for their achievements. Additionally, interns visiting from Japan participated in the awards, celebrating alongside the local organizing team.
Providing a Safe Space through Soccer
Kibera is home to many children facing harsh living conditions. In this environment, the Kibera A-GOAL League serves as a vital refuge where children can engage in sports and build lasting friendships. Notably, the league also provides meals for the participating children, having distributed approximately 44,000 meals during the first leg of this season. For many children who struggle to access sufficient nutrition, the provision of meals during practice and matches helps create a supportive environment where they can thrive physically and emotionally.
The league focuses on more than just soccer; it fosters a sense of community, allows children to share experiences, and offers them the chance to be fully immersed in the sport they love. Through these daily activities, the Kibera A-GOAL League plays a crucial role in the children's healthy development.
Strengthening Local Leadership and Community Engagement
Over the past four years of operation, local members have gradually taken the lead in organizing the league, establishing a sustainable management structure. This season has also seen increased opportunities for interaction with visitors from Japan and overseas, creating moments where individuals can not only watch the league but actively participate, such as playing soccer alongside the children. Connecting Japan and Africa through sports is another element that A-GOAL greatly values in this initiative.
Upcoming Second Leg and International Participation
Looking ahead, the KIKKOMAN Kibera A-GOAL League 2026 will continue its momentum following the first leg. The second leg is set to begin at the end of August and will run until early December. The league is committed to providing an environment where Kibera's children can safely participate in sports and grow alongside their teammates.
Approximately 40 selected players from this season's league will also compete in the Ligi Ndogo East Africa Cup, to be held from August 19 to August 23 at Imara Ground in Nairobi. This tournament will welcome teams from various parts of East Africa, giving Kibera A-GOAL's select players the opportunity to showcase their skills developed during the league. Details regarding match schedules will be shared on A-GOAL’s social media platforms as they become available. Supporters are encouraged to attend and cheer for the children's efforts.

About Kibera A-GOAL League
The Kibera A-GOAL League, initiated by A-GOAL in collaboration with the local NGO Agave Hope for Kibera, began in October 2022, catering to children in the Kibera slum of Kenya. The league encompasses categories for U9, U11, U13, and U15, with approximately 50 teams and 1,600 children participating. Given Kibera's reputation as one of Africa's largest slums, the league seeks to provide a conducive environment for children to remain actively engaged in soccer, aiming to deter them from crime. Additionally, it offers meals to the league participants and provides essential support, including menstrual hygiene products to female players and counseling.
