A Transformative Experience at Shinko Festival 2026
On April 18th and 19th, 2026, the SHIMOKITA COLLEGE in Tokyo became a melting pot of ideas, aspirations, and conversations at the Shinko Festival 2026, hosted by Satonoba University. This event merged high school students with university students, young professionals, and educators, facilitating open discussions to explore individual pathways beyond conventional academic metrics. Over 100 participants, including high-schoolers worried about their futures and parents seeking guidance, engaged in meaningful dialogues, reflecting their aspirations and uncertainties.
An Evolving Format for Discovery
Unlike previous years, this edition of the festival adopted a committee structure, uniting 11 educational organizations, universities, and enterprises under one roof. Here, students were encouraged to move away from the overwhelming pressure of standardized testing and instead contemplate broader possibilities, such as gap years and studying abroad. The atmosphere was one of curiosity, fostering not just passive listening but also genuine exchanges of experiences between participants and speakers—many of whom shared unconventional success stories.
Participants’ Voices: Expanding Perspectives
Feedback from attendees revealed a notable impact:
- - Diverse Choices: 70% of participants expressed that the festival broadened their view on career choices and enhanced their self-understanding.
- - One attendee remarked, “Talking to people who pursue different paths provided me with inspiration and showed me I might have numerous options.”
- - Another shared, “Interacting with individuals from varied backgrounds was fulfilling, and I wanted to converse even more.”
- - Participants noted significant shifts from feelings of doubt to empowerment regarding their future pursuits. This community setting allowed them to glean insights that they had not previously considered, confronting existential uncertainties with newfound positivity.
Engaging Workshops for Self-Exploration
The workshops held at the SHIMOKITA COLLEGE were particularly noteworthy. Participants took part in innovative self-exploration activities, such as employing AI tools to articulate their strengths, and engaging in LEGO®-based sessions to dive deeper into understanding themselves. These creative methods enabled attendees to articulate visions for their desired futures.
The university’s unique “Regional Study Abroad Experience Game” allowed participants to simulate living in different regions for four years, cultivating awareness about what necessary skills and passions they might want to develop.
Conversations Beyond the Classroom
A highlight of this year's event was the dialogue program “Ask a Senior: What Were You Doing at 18?” where high school students gathered to share their worries with current university students and professionals. These interactions provided critical access to relatable struggles and breakthroughs that shaped the lives of the older participants. Attendees learned about diverse pathways, not just traditional university routes, but also options like overseas studies, deferments for personal growth, and gap years. This initiative aimed to empower students by illustrating that paths to success are not one-size-fits-all and to encourage them to think outside the box.
Understanding Modern Learning Dynamics
A dedicated talk area was set up for discussions around the evolving nature of education in our rapidly changing world. Guest speakers included industry leaders such as Akira Ishikawa, who has launched over 100 new businesses, Kozo Takei, a pioneer of decentralized management, and Kenji Kamura, a specialist in teal organizations. They engaged with participants on topics like required skills in the AI era and transitioning from competition to collaboration, thereby fostering a rich dialogue on contemporary education needs and the skills necessary for thriving in an uncertain future.
