Breaking the Barriers of Japan's Insularity: The Yamanashi Initiative

Despite having one of the most powerful passports in the world, Japanese youth are ironically more inclined to stay within their comfort zones than to explore the globe. This paradox has prompted a concerted effort from Imagina Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Yamanashi Prefecture, to foster a new generation of globally-minded individuals.

On February 28, 2026, Yamanashi Governor Kōtarō Nagasaki and Imagina's CEO Yoshiki Sekino held an event titled “Talking with Governor Nagasaki: Yamanashi's Challenges and Future.” The purpose of the event was to ignite a discussion on how to catalyze Japan's youth to step outside their familiar surroundings in order to break free from the psychological shackles that keep them trapped in an inward-looking mindset. The initiative aims to dismantle biases that cloud young people's worldviews and instead cultivate authentic global leaders emerging from local contexts.

As other nations aggressively promote international education, Japan finds itself in a state often described as an educational isolation.

Recognizing the pressing societal need to counter this stagnation and inherent biases, the event was designed to serve as a catalyst for deeper change within Japan.
