A Journey of Cultural Discovery: The Kakehashi Project

In February 2026, a group of outstanding students from the United States and Canada will embark on an exciting journey to Japan as part of the Kakehashi Project. This unique initiative, supported by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aims to promote mutual understanding and cultural exchange between Japan and North America.

Participants and Their Experiences

The Kakehashi Project will welcome a total of 22 participants, including 11 winners of the Japanese Speech Contest from the US, 5 dedicated Japanese learners from Canada, and 6 top performers from the Japan Bowl, a quiz competition that tests knowledge of Japanese language and culture. Accompanied by supervisors, these young individuals are eager to immerse themselves in Japanese life, culture, and society.

The itinerary includes homestays, cultural experiences, and networking opportunities with students from Chukyo University in Nagoya. This interaction will not only provide insights into day-to-day life in Japan but will also strengthen their desire to pursue studies or job opportunities in the country.

Educational Visits and Cultural Exchange

Participants will engage in a variety of activities that include visiting historical sites like Nagoya Castle and modern institutions such as TEPIA, where they will witness Japan's advancements in technology. Furthermore, they will explore the significance of cultural landmarks like Meiji Shrine and Harajuku, which embody the fusion of tradition and contemporary Japan.

At the Japan-Canada University Consortium’s Japanese Studies Center, the students will share their experiences and discoveries, actively promoting Japan's allure. They will also partake in workshops designed to enhance cross-cultural communication skills, thus preparing them to become ambassadors of Japanese culture in their home countries.

Program Overview

The Kakehashi Project not only focuses on fostering international ties but also emphasizes the importance of understanding Japan's political, economic, social, cultural, and historical contexts. By facilitating these exchanges, the program aims to build a foundation for future cooperation and support for Japan.

Scheduled for February 13 to 19, 2026, the program will kick off in major cities: Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Aichi.
