RootsTech 2025: A Celebration of Family Connections

RootsTech 2025 has placed Salt Lake City at the forefront of genealogy and family history this March, bringing together enthusiasts and newcomers alike in an exploration of heritage and identity. The event, which is taking place from March 6 to 8, is renowned for its focus on innovation, utilizing cutting-edge technology to help individuals explore their roots. This year's theme, "Discover," emphasizes the potential of new technology in genealogy.

Steve Rockwood, President and CEO of FamilySearch, the organization hosting RootsTech, shared during the media presentation at the Salt Palace Convention Center, that the ultimate goal of the event is to unite families across generations—past, present, and future. He remarked on the transformative experience of discovering how we are connected, noting that such revelations lead to profound changes in how we perceive one another. With the advancements in genealogical technology, particularly in the last decade, participants can expect to witness the role of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) in making the task of understanding one’s own identity quicker and more streamlined than ever before.

Participants can look forward to an engaging lineup of hundreds of in-person and virtual courses offered in over 40 languages. The event includes interactive activities and entertainment aimed at inspiring attendees from all walks of life who have a passion for family history. Alongside the vast array of learning opportunities, the exhibit hall showcases the latest innovations in genealogy, allowing attendees to delve deeper into modern tools and resources.

The registration numbers this year reflect a significant interest, with millions having signed up online and between 15,000 to 20,000 expected to attend in person, marking a record participation across the globe. With representation from over 230 countries and regions, RootsTech is increasingly illustrating the universal nature of family connections that resonate with people everywhere.

Among the distinguished speakers set to share their personal stories and insights are Ndaba Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela; prominent artist Dana Tanamachi; Olympic gold medalists Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall; and Emmy award-winning singer-songwriter Rachel Platten. In addition to these inspiring talks, pre-recorded speeches from social media influencers and musicians promise to enrich the event's narrative.

The Family Discovery Day on March 8 is free and intended for all ages. It includes live music and family history activities, with Elder Neil L. Andersen scheduled to speak, sharing his childhood experiences and how they relate to the importance of family history and temple blessings.

As participants embark on their journeys of personal discovery and historical exploration, they are reminded of the fundamental human desire to connect and belong. Elder Kevin S. Hamilton, Executive Director of the Church's Family History Department, highlighted that the desire for connection is deeply ingrained in our DNA, expressing joy in facilitating these connections during RootsTech.

In conclusion, RootsTech 2025 proves to be more than just a convention; it represents a vibrant community where technology, family history, and human connection converge. Attendees are encouraged to seek out their family stories, make new connections, and engage with the innovative tools that enhance family exploration. The energy and enthusiasm surrounding this event signify its importance in today’s society as we understand more about ourselves through our ancestors.
