Sudamala Resorts Strengthens Commitment to Sustainable Tourism with Solar Power and Coral Restoration

Sudamala Resorts Leads the Way in Sustainable Tourism

In the scenic vistas of Indonesia, Sudamala Resorts, a collection of culturally inspired boutique hotels, is taking significant strides towards promoting sustainable tourism. These efforts align luxury guest experiences with long-term ecological responsibility, creating a unique balance that not only enriches visitor stays but also protects the environment.

One of the cornerstone achievements of Sudamala Resorts is the integration of solar energy at the Sudamala Resort in Seraya, Labuan Bajo, Flores. This robust solar system now fulfills approximately 80% to 85% of the resort's operational energy needs through renewable solar power. The setup comprises 480 solar panels with a total capacity of 300 kWp and is supported by a battery storage system of 770 kWh. This innovative facility generates around 410,000 kWh of clean energy annually, resulting in a substantial reduction of approximately 370,000 kg of carbon emissions per year. With this ambitious transition, the resort significantly lessens its reliance on diesel generators and showcases the viability of renewable energy in remote island settings.

In addition to its clean energy program, Sudamala Resorts is actively involved in coral reef restoration and marine conservation initiatives. Collaborating with conservation organizations and local foundations, the resort takes part in innovative coral restoration efforts. These initiatives utilize specially designed reef structures that promote coral regeneration and enhance marine biodiversity. By contributing to healthier coastal ecosystems, Sudamala Resorts not only benefits the environment but also raises awareness among guests and local communities about the importance of marine conservation.

Sustainability efforts at Sudamala extend throughout its entire portfolio, including responsible waste management, recycling of used cooking oil, water conservation, and community initiatives. These comprehensive actions reflect Sudamala’s holistic approach to sustainability, intertwining environmental care, cultural heritage preservation, and community empowerment.

Recognizing these commendable efforts, Sudamala Resorts has been awarded the Best Sustainability Program at the 2026 ASEANTA Excellence Awards, which will be presented during the 2026 ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) in the Philippines. This regional accolade underscores Sudamala’s leadership in responsible tourism in Southeast Asia and its growing recognition among global travelers seeking meaningful, low-impact travel experiences.

Ben Subrata, the CEO of Sudamala Resorts, stated, “Environmental stewardship is fundamental to how we operate and how we host our guests. We are committed to growing in harmony with the environments and cultures that inspire us.” Through these pioneering initiatives, Sudamala Resorts reaffirms its positioning as a hotel brand where sustainability is not merely an add-on; it is a core value shaping each destination's essence.
