Snow Secure's Innovative Snow Storage Technology Achieves 85% Retention in Aspen Summer Tests

In an impressive display of efficiency, Snow Secure has successfully showcased its innovative snow storage technology during a pilot project at Aspen, Colorado. This summer marked the company's first testing of their insulated mats, aiming to retain snow through extreme heat conditions typical of the Colorado summer. With drone measurements taken throughout the project, it was reported that a remarkable 85% of the snow volume remained intact beneath the mats by the end of the summer.

The project started in April, when snow was covered at Aspen Snowmass. Continuous temperature monitoring began on April 30 and lasted until August 31. The results were astounding; while surface temperatures soared to nearly 118°F (averaging out to 61.8°F), the snow underneath the insulation mats maintained a stable temperature just above freezing at 33.6°F (0.9°C). This impressive feat was made possible through maintaining a thermal gap of over 84°F, illustrating the outstanding insulating capabilities of the mats.

Antti Lauslahti, CEO of Snow Secure, elaborated on the implications of their technology: "Resorts cannot control the autumn weather, but snow storage gives them another way to control when they have snow available. Insulation is what makes summer storage possible in demanding conditions." This technology not only preserves the snow but could greatly enhance guest experiences from opening day by reducing reliance on early-season snowmaking.

The pilot project at Aspen Snowmass aligns with the resort’s commitment to sustainability and climate resilience. Anticipating a future where water and energy conservation become increasingly vital, Aspen Snowmass has expressed confidence in integrating this snow storage technology into its operations. By covering existing snowpack, they aim to minimize reliance on artificial snow, which requires substantial resources to produce.

The effectiveness of Snow Secure's systems has already seen rapid adoption across North America, with over ten ski resorts integrating these patented solutions in just two seasons. Beyond America, the technology has reached over 150 installations worldwide, earning a spot on TIME's Best Inventions of 2025 list, solidifying its impact in the snow storage industry.

As the ski industry faces challenges related to climate change, particularly the increasing unpredictability of snowfall seasons, Snow Secure’s insulated mats represent a proactive approach to ensuring ski resorts can maintain their snow supply. The potential for scaling this technology across various mountains is promising, with Aspen Snowmass monitoring the pilot results meticulously to refine and expand upon these innovations in the coming years.

Moreover, the partnership between Snow Secure and SMI Snow Makers highlights the collaborative efforts underway to continuously improve snowmaking processes while mitigating their environmental impact. Snow Secure’s commitment to advanced engineering, combined with snow operations expertise, positions them at the forefront of the snow storage revolution.

In summary, the successful pilot project in Aspen not only underlines the capabilities of Snow Secure's insulated snow storage technology but also sets a new standard for sustainability in the ski resort industry. As more resorts look to incorporate these practices, the future of winter sports could remain bright even in the face of climate change challenges.
