Ascend Performance Materials Unveils Bio-Circular High-Performance Chemicals in PA66 Production

Ascend Performance Materials Introduces Bio-Circular High-Performance Chemicals

Ascend Performance Materials, based in Houston, Texas, has made a significant leap in sustainable production with the announcement of its successful manufacturing of high-performance chemicals, specifically Acrylnitril (acrylonitrile), Hexamethylendiamin (hexamethylenediamine), Adipinsäure (adipic acid), and Nylon 6,6. This innovative process utilizes raw materials sourced from used cooking oil, marking a substantial advancement in their Bioserve product portfolio.

The new Nylon 6,6 produced through this process boasts a remarkable 25% reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional Nylon 6,6 derived from fossil fuels. This accomplishment is made possible through the ISCC Plus certified mass balance approach, allowing Ascend to deliver sustainable materials at an industrial scale without any compromise on performance.

All production facilities operated by Ascend in the United States are certified according to the ISCC Plus criteria, ensuring compliance with regulations surrounding the processing of bio-based, circular, and bio-circular materials. This certification underscores the commitment of Ascend Performance Materials to sustainable manufacturing practices, as expressed by Alex Mihut, Vice President of Performance Chemicals at the company. Mihut stated, “Our focus is on providing technical solutions to meet our customer challenges. By utilizing a mass balance approach, we can meet the increasing demand for sustainable materials at scale while maintaining reliable performance and quality.”

Additionally, Ascend is actively working to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, further benefiting the environment with its Bioserve products. The company believes it currently offers one of the lowest CO2 footprints for industrially manufactured Nylon 6,6 and its precursors available in the market.

Chris Johnson, Chief Sustainability Officer at Ascend, emphasized the company's sustainability strategy, which includes a commitment described as ‘Operation Without Compromise.’ This initiative focuses on finding comprehensive solutions that align with customer needs and assist them in attaining their sustainability goals.

Notably, Ascend has recently released its 2023 Sustainability Report, detailing its progress towards the company’s 2030 vision, which aims to balance business growth with environmental stewardship.
