Global Youth Gather in China to Celebrate Mazu Culture and Heritage

Empowering Youth to Connect with Mazu's Legacy

From October 27 to November 1, the serene city of Putian, Fujian, welcomed over 200 representatives from Gen Z across more than 20 nations for the Mazu Culture Youth Exchange Forum. Titled Global Gen Z in Dialogue with Mazu Culture, this pivotal event centered around the theme of Empowering Youth to Build a Shared Future, profoundly enriching the understanding of Mazu's spirit while fostering global cultural dialogues.

Participants embarked on a journey to various cultural landmarks, heritage parks, and local sites, gaining hands-on experiences with traditional craftsmanship and learning intricacies of local heritage and economic growth. The immersive atmosphere provided a direct connection for overseas youth with the rich cultural fabric of Mazu.

The Voices of Diversity

Participants echoed their sentiments, showcasing the cross-cultural relevance of Mazu culture. Lam Phuoc Thanh, a student from Vietnam, expressed joy about visiting Mazu's birthplace, calling it a realization of his childhood dream. “Mazu serves as a cultural ambassador, uniting people through shared values of kindness and compassion,” he remarked, highlighting the core ethos of Mazu culture.

Furthermore, Amirlin Niijima, a Japanese attendee, found deep connections with maritime traditions during her visit. She emphasized that the cultural parallels between Mazu worship and Okinawan indigenous practices reflect a mutual respect for nature, suggesting that these similarities are more than a coincidence. “This journey has inspired me to advocate for marine environmental cooperation between China and Japan,” she added, showcasing the event’s potential to create collaborative futures.

Pakistani student Tanveer Ahmed noted that the dedication displayed by generations of inheritors of Mazu traditions deeply affected him. He praised the modern MAZU AI for meteorological warnings, explaining how Mazu historically symbolizes safety while today it integrates technology to protect against natural calamities. “It’s fascinating to see how ancient traditions adapt to modern needs,” he stated.

Initiative for a Shared Future

The forum culminated in the unveiling of the Silk Road Youth, Building a Shared Future – Global Gen Z Meizhou Initiative, aimed at encouraging youth to advance Mazu culture, safeguard marine ecosystems, and strengthen inter-civilizational exchanges. This initiative signifies hopes for global youth to lead in preserving cultural heritages and developing innovative solutions for contemporary issues.

Guyanese student Ya Meng Wan shared her first encounter with Mazu culture through social media and Chinese dramas, particularly fascinated by the ola ceremony and traditional rituals observed during temple processions. “Experiencing it in person was enlightening. Mazu culture isn’t just historical; it resonates in the lives of people today,” she remarked during a visit to the Mazu Ancestral Temple, where she observed the vibrant yet solemn atmosphere surrounding the worship.

Conclusion

The Mazu Culture Youth Exchange Forum highlights how youth today are not just inheritors of culture but active participants shaping a shared future. By connecting with the Mazu tradition, these young voices are building bridges that transcend geographical boundaries, fostering a sense of community and mutual respect. As they carry forward Mazu's legacy, the hope is to inspire a generation devoted to kindness, communication, and collaborative growth across diverse cultures.
