Friends & Co Reconnects Minnesotans with Past Experiences of Little Brothers

Friends & Co Reconnects with Minnesota's Heartfelt Memories

In a heartfelt initiative, Friends & Co is reaching out to the community to reminisce about their cherished experiences with the organization formerly known as Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly Twin Cities. Founded over fifty years ago, this Minnesota-based nonprofit has fostered countless friendships and community gatherings, providing a sense of belonging and connection for many older adults.

A Call for Memories

Friends & Co, which rebranded from Little Brothers in 2022, is inviting past volunteers, donors, and community members to share their experiences and memorable moments. The goal is to honor the legacy of Little Brothers while further embracing an inclusive identity that celebrates friendship as central to its mission.

Amber Carlson, the chief philanthropy officer at Friends & Co, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, "We know that Little Brothers holds a special place in the hearts of many Minnesotans. People remember volunteering, making friends, and donating. Those memories are still part of our story, and the work they remember continues today."

Cherished Recollections

Among the first to respond is Mary D., who fondly recalls meeting Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson. During a fundraising event, Wilson shared his experiences from his early days in the Twin Cities, a time when he worked as a part-time cook at Little Brothers. This interaction stands as a testament to the impactful connections made through the organization.

Another supporter, Kevin Filter, now the owner of Dual Citizen Brewing, shared that his family's tradition of generosity led him to Little Brothers for charitable contributions. His father’s suggestion laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to supporting this vital organization. "It’s all about the people," Filter said, underscoring the essence of the community's shared history.

Former volunteer Carolyn Trevis recalls her impactful connection with Esther, an older adult she was matched with. Despite challenging circumstances, Esther’s resilience left a lasting impression on Trevis, teaching her invaluable life lessons about perspective and positivity.

Celebrating a Legacy

Since its inception in 1972, Little Brothers has dedicated itself to creating companionship, community celebrations, and shared meals, ensuring that older adults never feel isolated. With the rebranding to Friends & Co, the organization aims to maintain the spirit of friendship that has been integral to its mission. "These aren't simply relationships where one person helps another," Carlson explained. "They're friendships where both people have something valuable to share. Our new name reflects that more clearly."

The updated visual identity and logo, recognized with a GDUSA American Graphic Design Award in 2022, represents not just a new look, but a renewed commitment to advocating for the elderly community.

Gathering Insights and Memories

Friends & Co is actively gathering memories from former volunteers, donors, and community members who knew the organization as Little Brothers. They are encouraging participants to submit their stories and photographs that capture meaningful experiences from the past. Community members can share their stories online until November 30, 2026, and selected contributions may be displayed on the organization's website and social media platforms.

With free programs that promote meaningful relationships among older adults – including Visiting Companions, Phone Companions, and community luncheons – Friends & Co aims to continue its mission of fostering friendships that enrich lives.

This initiative not only reflects the organization's history but reinforces its commitment to reducing social isolation for older adults and promoting a sense of belonging in the community. To learn more about how to share your memories, visit Friends&Co.org.
