Victory for Casino Workers: Teamsters Strike at Encore Boston Harbor Ends With New Agreement
Strong Unity Prevails: Teamsters Secure New Agreement at Encore Boston Harbor
After enduring a challenging eight and a half weeks on the picket line, over 1,300 workers at Encore Boston Harbor have celebrated a decisive victory. Represented by Teamsters Local 25 and UNITE HERE Local 26, these dedicated employees overwhelmingly ratified a five-and-a-half-year collective bargaining agreement that promises significant wage increases, enhanced benefits, and notably improved working conditions.
A Fight for Respect and Fairness
Thomas G. Mari, President of Teamsters Local 25, expressed pride in the unity displayed by the workers during this strike. He emphasized, “This strike demonstrated what happens when working people come together and refuse to be intimidated. Our members stood as one, fighting for the respect and the contract they rightfully deserve.”
Mari highlighted that Encore Boston Harbor’s success is grounded in the hard work of its employees, asserting that the new agreement acknowledges the value these workers bring to the establishment.
Earlier in August, workers authorized the strike vote after the company displayed reluctance to negotiate in good faith for a new contract. Delays and failures at the bargaining table left workers with no choice but to take a stand in September, leading to this strike.
Strength of a Unified Workforce
Tommy Blitsch, Director of the Teamsters Convention, Trade Show, and Casino Division, noted the workers' perseverance. He stated, “The determination and unity shown by these workers paid off. The company underestimated the strength of an organized workforce, and this victory sends a loud and clear message across the gaming industry – the Teamsters and their allies are serious about securing strong contracts.”
Workers at Encore Boston Harbor play indispensable roles across various departments, including warehouse, horticulture, call center, limousine services, and guest experience operations. Their labor is critical for the resort’s operations, making the new agreement especially significant for the fabric of the organization.
James Atkins, the lead horticulturalist and chief steward of Local 25, reflected on the unity fostered during the strike, stating, “We stood together as union brothers and sisters, advocating for the dignity and respect we sought all along. We look forward to returning to work with the same commitment and solidarity, enriching the experiences of our guests and supporting our fellow workers.”
Impact on Encore Boston Harbor's Revenue
The strike had tangible repercussions on Encore Boston Harbor’s financial performance. In September 2026, the casino recorded an approximately 22% decline in gross gaming revenue compared to the previous year, totaling around $46.06 million. Despite these challenges, workers remain hopeful that this new agreement will foster a better working atmosphere, ultimately benefiting both employees and the casino’s patrons.
Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters now encompasses 1.3 million members across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, advocating for labor rights and union solidarity. The recent victory at Encore Boston Harbor stands as a testament to the resilience of workers united in their cause.
