Exploring the Connection Between Walking and Learning in New Book 'TRAIL LEARNING'

Introduction

A new book titled TRAIL LEARNING - Exploring the Adventure of 'Walking' has been published by 3710Lab, led by director Yasudai Taguchi. This book, funded by the Nippon Foundation, is based on the innovative concept of Trail Learning, which beautifully illustrates the intertwining journeys of walking and learning. The authors hope readers will engage with it and uncover their own stories through the act of walking.

This work invites readers to recognize the profound potential of walking and to weave one’s personal narrative as they walk. As shown in Rebecca Solnit's Wanderlust: A History of Walking, walking is more than just a means of transportation; it is an exercise in thought and creativity. Ancient Greek philosophers famously engaged in discussions while strolling, and pilgrims have found self-revelation on their journeys. In much the same way, we too have gleaned fresh insights through walking.

The book is the product of collaboration between Lucas B.B., editor of PAPERSKY, and Yasudai Taguchi, representing 3710Lab. Lucas developed the KATSUO TRAIL, which begins in Yaizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, through an idea of creating one's own path while traveling across Japan. Meanwhile, Taguchi has conducted over seventy marine education projects centered around the theme of the connection between the sea and the self. From their dialogues emerged the concept linking walking with learning, supported by a project initiated with the help of the Nippon Foundation.

Historically, walking has served as a vital means of connecting with nature, sparking thoughts and creativity. However, in today’s society, our connection to nature and the joy of being authentic seem to be fading. The essence of Trail Learning is to reassess the value of walking and to share it culturally.

The book features thirteen creative contributors, including designers, poets, artists, and photographers, each outlining the charm of walking through their unique perspectives. Via their stories, readers may uncover how walking can deepen thought and inspire new creativity, serving as a potential catalyst to finding their own meaning in walking. By experiencing the insights and inspiration gained from walking, you may find an opportunity to reflect on yourself. This book promises a rich exploration of new discoveries and joy in learning through walking.
