Experience the Autumn Limited Edition Tokugawa Kirie Goshuin
This September 14, 2025, Kaneiji Temple in Ueno, Tokyo, is set to unveil a special autumn edition of the Tokugawa Kirie Goshuin, a unique artistic stamp commemorating the temple's illustrious history. Visitors can obtain this limited release while supplies last.
Kaneiji Temple serves as a significant Buddhist site known for its deep ties to the Tokugawa Shogunate, where six of the fifteen shoguns are buried. Following the success of the first-ever Kirie Goshuin launched this year, the autumn version promises another influx of visitors who wish to pay their respects and collect this extraordinary memento.
The Story Behind the Goshuin
The Tokugawa Kirie Goshuin is inspired by the origin story of Kaneiji Temple, initially established to honor the Tokugawa family's connection to the area. The temple was built on land that once belonged to the mythical foxes of Shinobugaoka, where the second shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada, established the temple. To provide a habitat for these foxes, Tenkai Daishō, the high priest entrusted with this land, created a cave and constructed an Inari shrine above it. The essence of this history is captured beautifully in the design of the autumn Kirie Goshuin, which expresses the foxes thriving in their new environment amid the bounties of autumn.
The original Inari Shrine remains in Ueno Park today as the Hanazono Inari Shrine, with the cave supposedly dug by Tenkai Daishō still exists, serving as a mysterious resting place for nocturnal foxes. Visitors who collect this Goshuin will not only obtain a piece of artwork but also connect with the rich narrative of Ueno's past and the foxes' lore.

About Kaneiji Temple
Established in 1625 by Tenkai Daishō, Kaneiji Temple has long served as a significant Buddhist site within the Tendai sect. It was founded to pray for the safety of the Tokugawa Shogunate and for the peace of the populace. Over the years, it has also become the burial site for shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna, thereby solidifying its role as a temple of the Tokugawa clan. In the Edo period, by welcoming the prince of the royal family as the head priest, Kaneiji grew to be one of Japan's largest temples in both prestige and scale. As it approaches its 400th anniversary in 2025, the temple stands as a monument to the history of Ueno.
