Celebrating Digital Education: Huawei's DigiTruck Program in Kenya Graduates New Talent

Celebrating Digital Skills in Kenya: Huawei's DigiTruck Initiative

On March 17, 2025, a significant milestone was reached in Homa Bay, Kenya, where Huawei's DigiTruck project celebrated the graduation of 290 young individuals. This achievement marks the culmination of a six-week intensive training program aimed at fostering essential digital skills in a landscape where technology is rapidly evolving.

The DigiTruck initiative is part of Huawei’s broader commitment to digital inclusion through their TECH4ALL program, which prioritizes accessibility and sustainability in the digital era. The program specifically targeted young people, teaching them critical skills such as computer literacy, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and cybersecurity—all essential components for thriving in today's digital economy.

Among the graduates, 143 were women and 147 were men, reflecting a balanced approach to inclusivity in the training process.

"Digital skills are no longer optional—they are a necessity," stated Dr. Raymond Omollo, the Chief Secretary at the Kenyan Ministry of Interior Security and National Administration. His words underscore the importance of equipping our youth with the ability to navigate a technology-driven world confidently and safely.

DigiTruck is designed as a mobile classroom powered entirely by solar energy. It comes equipped with workstations, internet connectivity, and various digital tools, allowing it to reach even the most remote and underserved communities. Since the program's inception in Kenya in 2019, DigiTruck has provided free training to over 6,030 young people across 36 counties, primarily focusing on job seekers, girls, and women. In 2024 alone, out of 1,648 trainees, 906 were women, showcasing a concerted effort towards gender equality in digital skill development.

Adam Lane, Huawei's Director of Government Affairs and Policy, commented, “Through our university partnerships with over 60 universities and TVET institutions, we operate DigiTruck to reach youth outside formal education and in rural areas. I am proud to say we have achieved gender parity among the trainees, as digital skills are truly essential for everyone in today's economy.”

The DigiTruck initiative operates in collaboration with several local organizations and government bodies, including the National Council for Youth and Computers for Schools Kenya. This partnership aligns with Kenya’s national Agenda for Economic Transformation and the Digital Superhighways initiative, demonstrating the government's commitment to bridging the digital divide and fostering the leaders of tomorrow.

In Homa Bay, the training program also featured an innovation competition that encouraged participants to devise practical community solutions. Winners developed digital health solutions aimed at improving healthcare delivery, enhancing the lives of local quarry workers, and promoting awareness around online and cyber safety.

The graduated students are expected to pursue further ICT courses, expand their digital enterprises, and support digitization efforts in rural communities. DigiTruck represents one of the Skills on Wheels programs initiated under the TECH4ALL initiative. By the end of 2024, this initiative aims to train over 110,000 individuals across 20 countries, covering more than 50,000 kilometers.
