The Art of Giving: A Global Movement for Peace and Happiness
Art of Giving (AOG) is more than just a philosophy; it's a movement that encourages individuals worldwide to embrace kindness, compassion, and community commitment. Founded by Professor Achyuta Samanta, an educator and social reformer, AOG is dedicated to promoting peace and happiness through the act of giving. At its core, AOG rests on a simple yet profound principle: humans are inherently wired to give. Unfortunately, the desire for material possessions often overshadows our natural inclination towards generosity and altruism.
The roots of AOG run deep, intertwined with Professor Samanta's personal journey through poverty and adversity. Beginning at the tender age of five, he practiced the art of giving even when he had little to offer. This lifelong commitment to generosity blossomed into a broader mission, culminating in the formal launch of Art of Giving on May 17, 2013, now celebrated as International Art of Giving Day. Each year, this day revolves around a unique theme aimed at addressing contemporary needs and emotional resonances.
Annual Themes Reflecting Human Needs
Since its inception, Art of Giving has consistently chosen themes that resonate deeply with people’s experiences. The initiative started in 2014, addressing issues surrounding community, spirituality, and humanity. The following year, the theme, 'Kompassion: The Clothing Bank,' urged individuals to donate their unused clothing to those in need. The challenges of the 2020 pandemic led to the impactful theme, 'AOG Fights Against Coronavirus,' which focused on supporting frontline workers and affected families. In 2021, 'My Mother, My Hero' illustrated heartfelt gratitude as participants penned letters to their mothers, recognizing their sacrifices.
Moving into 2024, the theme 'Let's Support AOG' emphasized universal participation, and for 2025, the 12th edition centers on 'Neighborly Goodness: Bringing Good to the Neighborhood.' This theme spotlights the significance of extending kindness to immediate circles—neighbors and local communities. From May 2 to 16, individuals worldwide engaged in gestures of kindness, whether sharing snacks, visiting elder neighbors, or organizing community events. The celebrations culminate in grand festivities on May 17, reinforcing the spirit of giving.
The Growing Family of Art of Giving
In the past decade, AOG has witnessed exponential growth, with over 2.5 million active members today. Its presence spans more than 220 national federations associated with the FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball), amplifying its values through sports and youth movements globally. Although AOG was formally established in 2013, its teachings transcend time.
Charity, or 'daan,' remains a cornerstone of Indian culture, with all major religions emphasizing the sacredness of generosity. From the zakat in Islam to the acts of compassion in Buddhism, the tradition of giving is honored across faiths. Professor Samanta's achievement through AOG is to modernize this wisdom, stripping it of religious and geographical filters, and fostering a global, inclusive, and joyful movement deeply rooted in humanity.
Through initiatives like Art of Giving, the vision of a more compassionate world becomes a collective journey. It invites people from all walks of life to rediscover joy through giving, reinforcing that true happiness lies not in material wealth but in the love and kindness we extend to others.
