Overview of the Internship Program
Premseed, a company based in Shibuya, Tokyo, operates the website "Go通信制高校," which serves as a platform for information on correspondence high schools. Recently, they announced that their internship program aimed at current and former students has exceeded 50 participants since its inception. The initiative began in August 2024, with the goal of enhancing societal understanding of the diverse learning experiences within correspondence high schools. Over the past year and a half, the number of participants has steadily grown, expanding the reach of their experiences shared with the community.
In light of the increasing number of correspondence high school students, with figures reaching around 300,000, Premseed is now opening recruitment for the fourth phase of its internship to gather even more voices from these young individuals. The rise signifies a need for greater awareness of their challenges and achievements in society.
Why the Need for Self-Advocacy?
As the student population in correspondence high schools continues to grow, so too does the variety of backgrounds and experiences they bring. This includes those who have faced challenges like school refusal, re-education, career indecision, and community building. The program seeks to bridge the gap between these experiences and societal understanding.
Through this internship, teenagers with relatable backgrounds serve as "mentors" or "reverse mentors," sharing their authentic stories. Their goal is to communicate the reality of correspondence education and showcase constructive ways of learning, not just to their peers, but also to parents.
Growth Through Experience
Participating in this internship is not only about sharing stories; it also fosters developmental growth for the interns themselves:
- - Positive Storytelling: Interns can share their experiences positively, realizing that their narratives can help others and improve their self-esteem. This act of sharing allows them to view their educational journeys more positively.
- - Diverse Community Interactions: Direct interactions with students from other schools and company employees broaden their perspectives by connecting across generational and positional lines.
- - Encouraged Responsibility: With a pay rate of 1,300 yen per hour, students not only gain practical experience in content creation but also develop a sense of responsibility as they engage in paid work.
