Aerospace and Defence Experts Address Challenges in Supply Chain and Counterfeit Avoidance

On September 24, 2026, the BSI headquarters in Milton Keynes witnessed a convergence of experts from the aerospace and defence sectors, all driven by a shared mission to discuss the pressing issues surrounding supply chain integrity and the evasion of counterfeit components. The Counterfeit Awareness & Trusted Supply Chains Workshop, organized by SMT Corp, featured talks from notable figures such as Mike Schwarm, President; Mark Broadhead, Vice President of Business Development and Marketing; and Dr. Nicholas Williams, Vice President of Technology.

The event's agenda focused on vital topics including supply chain assurance, the receding shadows of counterfeit cases, and methodologies for component authentication and testing. The professionals gathered delved deep into three critical challenges that underpin the security of the UK’s defence supply chain:
1. Maintaining Control Across the Supply Chain:
As components transition through various tiers of suppliers, the danger of counterfeit products increases. Implementing robust contractual obligations, diligent supplier oversight, and comprehensive supporting documentation are essential to preserve visibility beyond the immediate suppliers. This helps ensure that every link in the supply chain adheres to the established standards.
2. Clarifying Requirement Applications:
UK Defence Standard 05-135 (DEF STAN 05-135) provides a framework for managing counterfeit material risks. However, its correct application hinges on clear communication of procurement and contractual stipulations. Engaging with sub-tier suppliers to relay these requirements is central to the effort to combat fake components.
3. Assisting New Entrants in Defence Compliance:
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), alongside businesses venturing into aerospace and defence from unrelated industries, face steep learning curves regarding expectations for traceability and supplier assurance. By sharing insights and practical knowledge, industry veterans can help these newcomers pinpoint deficiencies in their practices and install the requisite oversight mechanisms.

In one of the standout presentations, Dr. Williams elaborated on the pivotal role of component testing. He emphasized the necessity of establishing suitable verification techniques in collaboration with clients to ensure the credibility of components being used.

The workshop reinforced a crucial point: effective counterfeit risk mitigation extends beyond mere awareness of existing standards; it requires stringent implementation of controls at every stage of the supply chain. The responsibilities do not lie solely with one entity; every organization involved must ensure comprehensive communication regarding standards and requirements.

As a follow-up to this enlightening workshop, SMT Corp has pledged to continue contributing to the body of technical knowledge surrounding counterfeit mitigation efforts within the European aerospace and defence sectors. The organization will play a key role in enhancing awareness and understanding of counterfeit detection and continued strengthening of the supply chain's integrity.
