Minister Toshiako Abe Visits AFJ Japan Agricultural Management University

On July 29, 2023, Toshiako Abe, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, visited the AFJ Japan Agricultural Management University, operated by the general incorporated association Agrifuture Japan. The visit aimed to gain insights into the agricultural management training environment, guided by the minister's expressed desire to understand the landscape surrounding agricultural leadership development.

Overview of the Visit
During the visit, the university presented two of its educational programs: the 'Innovator Training Academy' and the 'Online School.' The attendees had the opportunity to observe lectures and tour the facilities, furthering discussions with faculty and corporate staff.

The visit began with a welcoming speech by Hiroki Agase, the chairperson of Agrifuture Japan, who introduced the history and development of the university since its establishment. Notably, he explained the new curriculum initiated in the 2023 academic year. Following this, attendees, guided by Agase and Executive Director Ono, toured the facilities and observed lectures aimed at advancing the agricultural sector through innovative education.

The exchange of ideas included not only university staff but also faculty members. Minister Abe emphasized the importance of exit strategies in human resource development and explored potential collaboration with universities and local governments, providing various specific examples. The robust dialogue led to meaningful insights and suggestions for future developments in agricultural education.

The visit underscored the critical role education must play alongside government, agricultural sectors, industries, and academia in addressing the social challenges facing food and agriculture.
