American Camp Association Appoints Henry DeHart as New CEO to Enhance Camp Safety and Innovation

Henry DeHart Takes the Helm at the American Camp Association



On October 1, 2025, the American Camp Association (ACA) Board of Directors revealed the selection of Henry DeHart as their new Chief Executive Officer. His appointment comes at a critical time, especially following the tragic floods in Texas that raised significant concerns about camp safety. During his time as interim CEO, DeHart proved himself an effective leader, offering clear communication and coordinated responses to ensure the safety of children and staff alike.

DeHart’s journey with ACA began back in 2018 when he took on the role of Chief Operating Officer. With a history rooted in YMCA camping extending over 17 years, he possesses a wealth of experience that uniquely positions him to lead the ACA during this transitional phase. His background is a blend of practical knowledge in camp management and a passion for advancing community strength and resilience.

Steve Baskin, ACA Board Chair, emphasized that choosing a new leader is about more than just a name; it's about establishing trust. He expressed confidence in DeHart’s ability to provide steady guidance and a transformative vision for the future of the organization.

Also speaking on his appointment, DeHart stated, “It is an honor to be chosen to lead ACA at such an important time. Camps have always been places where safety, growth, and community converge. I look forward to collaborating with ACA's staff, volunteers, member camps, and all our partners to advance our shared goal of empowering the youth through enriching and secure camp experiences.”

DeHart’s immediate plans include continuing the rollout of ACA's Character at Camp initiative. This national endeavor is focused on helping camps instill essential life skills such as resilience, empathy, teamwork, and leadership among young campers. The initiative aims to deliver measurable outcomes, ensuring that the values cultivated during camp carry into campers' everyday lives. Grants have been awarded to both member and non-member camps to support this initiative, reflecting ACA's commitment to the holistic development of the children attending.

As a key player in the camping community, the ACA serves over 20,000 year-round and summer camps across the United States, impacting approximately 26 million campers annually. Their work is not limited to promoting camp experiences; they also provide advocacy, evidence-based education, and professional development, making them the sole independent accrediting body for organized camps.

Safety remains a pivotal concern for the ACA, especially in light of recent events. Each camp’s accreditation involves a rigorous evaluation against hundreds of safety standards, thereby assuring families of their children's security during camp.
