Spire Missouri's New Rate Case Filing: A Step Towards Improved Safety and Reliability
On November 2, 2026, Spire Missouri took a significant step forward by submitting a rate case to the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC). This initiative is designed to ensure continued investments in the natural gas infrastructure, enhancing safety, reliability, and overall service quality for its users.
Commitment to Safety and Service
According to Spire Missouri President, Steve Mills, the organization is dedicated to providing affordable and reliable natural gas services to over 1.2 million residents across Missouri. Mills emphasized that since the last rate case, Spire has continuously updated its systems, which has led to improved reliability of service. This modernization not only benefits consumers but also stimulates economic growth and job creation throughout the region.
If the PSC approves Spire's current request based on existing natural gas market conditions, residents in western Missouri could see an average increase of approximately $10 per month in their bills, representing an 11% rise. On the other hand, eastern Missouri customers may face a slightly steeper increase, with average monthly bills rising about $13 or 15%. These new rates are expected to take effect next fall, following the PSC's thorough review, which typically concludes about eleven months after a filing.
Investments in Infrastructure
Spire Missouri's commitment to enhancing its delivery systems has resulted in substantial investments. In total, the company has dedicated nearly $808 million to upgrade and maintain its gas distribution systems, significantly improving safety and reliability while also working to reduce emissions. This new infrastructure not only lowers ongoing maintenance costs but also ensures Missouri possesses the necessary energy framework to support its communities, economic development, and employment opportunities.
For fiscal year 2026 alone, Spire has supported 24 economic development projects in the state, amounting to nearly $537 million in investments and resulting in the creation of over 1,400 jobs. The availability of natural gas was pivotal in securing a number of these initiatives, illustrating the critical role that Spire plays in driving economic progress.
Supporting Vulnerable Customers
While Spire remains committed to keeping costs low for its customers, the utility recognizes that any increase can significantly impact vulnerable populations. To address this issue, Spire has worked diligently to connect customers with nearly $14 million in federal, state, and company-funded energy assistance. This funding is particularly crucial given the current inflationary environment and elevating living costs.
In addition to financial assistance, the company offers various programs to help customers manage their energy expenses more effectively. These programs include DollarHelp, Payment Arrangements, and the LIHEAP (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program), among others. Spire encourages those experiencing financial hardship to reach out for support by contacting their community partners or by dialing 211.
