The survey indicates that a significant 66.1% of respondents view Obon as a "good culture." Contrary to the notion that younger generations are distancing themselves from traditional customs, the survey revealed that participation in ancestral veneration, particularly grave visits, is notably high among those in their 20s, with up to 45.7% participating in such activities, marking the highest rate across age groups.

2. Obon Holidays and Family Connections

Overall, 70.8% of respondents reported taking some form of vacation during the Obon period, with children in the household influencing the likelihood of taking time off. Families with children saw a vacation uptake of 38.5% for the entire duration, which is significantly higher than the 28.3% in childless households. Additionally, feelings of necessity surrounding the Obon holidays were prominent; 82.9% of individuals in their 20s expressed that these holidays are essential for them.

Interestingly, only 40.6% reported returning to their hometowns during Obon, yet among married individuals, the return rate stood at 44.5%, showcasing a strong inclination amongst families to re-engage with ancestral homes and familial connections during this time.

Reasons for not returning included a desire to avoid crowds and high transportation costs, hinting at an evolving landscape where flexible travel times are increasingly prioritized. This adaptability may represent a shift in how modern families engage with Obon traditions.
