SEATOM Selected for NATO Defense Innovation Accelerator Challenge 2026
In a significant move for the maritime industry, SEATOM, a Finnish startup specializing in nuclear propulsion systems, has been selected for the 2026 cohort of the NATO Defense Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic, also known as DIANA. This prestigious selection underscores SEATOM's innovative approach to tackling critical defense and security challenges through advanced technology.
SEATOM's groundbreaking solution is a modular, affordable nuclear microreactor designed specifically for dual-use in maritime and extreme environments. The integration of this technology within NATO's DIANA program, especially under the "Operations in Extreme Environments" initiative, highlights the increasing importance of nuclear energy, particularly in challenging climates like the Arctic. Roope Marttila, co-founder and co-CEO of SEATOM, emphasized that now is an opportune moment for nuclear energy, as both national and international regulations are evolving in favor of nuclear options, reinforcing public support for nuclear maritime energy.
As part of this program, SEATOM will engage in a six-month collaboration, working closely with the DualTech Accelerator in Turin, Italy. This partnership will allow SEATOM to tap into a broader network of experts, mentors, and testing centers associated with DIANA across NATO member nations. The program promises access to top-tier testing infrastructure, market expertise in defense, and direct interaction with NATO end-users, which could be pivotal for SEATOM’s development process.
With an initial contractual funding of €100,000, SEATOM has the potential to secure additional financial support geared towards testing, evaluation, validation, and verification (TEVV) activities. Moreover, the firm will also have opportunities to actively participate in experiments and operational exercises collaboratively with allied forces, thereby strengthening its operational readiness and technological advancements.
DIANA serves as a crucial pathway for emerging technologists to integrate into the defense sector across the 32 NATO member states. By joining this elite group, SEATOM is poised to enhance its technological preparedness and elevate its offerings in defense and dual-use technology. The program's kickoff is scheduled for January 19, 2026, with a Demonstration Day set for June 2026 in Paris, during which participants will showcase their innovations.
