FirstEnergy Foundation Spreads Holiday Cheer with Grants for Local Nonprofits
As the holiday season approaches, the FirstEnergy Foundation is embracing the spirit of giving by awarding $20,000 in grants as part of their “Gifts of the Season” initiative. This generous program has chosen two nonprofits in New Jersey—Our Lady of Victories Church St. Vincent De Paul Society Food Pantry in Sayreville and The Burn Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston—who will each receive $10,000 to further their impactful work.
Supporting Food Insecurity
The first grant awarded to the St. Vincent De Paul Society Food Pantry will significantly address food insecurity in the community. Each month, the pantry provides essential food items for about 200 individuals, with demand greatly increasing during the festive seasons. During Thanksgiving and Christmas, this number amplifies to over 300 people. With the latest grant, the pantry will ensure access to nutritious proteins and dairy products, essential for families in need.
Enhancing Community Safety Education
The second grant, designated for The Burn Center, aims to support its crucial efforts in STEM education initiatives focusing on burn prevention and fire safety. This funding enables the center to expand its programs across central and northern New Jersey, helping to educate the public on safety practices. Notably, over 13,000 individuals have engaged in these education programs in the current year alone, including many of JCPL's line workers who benefit from pertinent safety training. Doug Mokoid, FirstEnergy's President in New Jersey, remarked, “These grants help local nonprofits respond to urgent needs and build safer, healthier communities.”
A Decade of Commitment
The “Gifts of the Season” program has now reached its 10th year, reflecting a decade of commitment from the FirstEnergy Foundation to empower local organizations. The foundation has contributed an impressive $1.2 million since the program's inception, showcasing its ability to adapt and respond to prevailing community needs.
