Eilersen's Strategic Move to Japan
Eilersen, a renowned Danish luxury sofa manufacturer, has taken a significant step by establishing a new production facility in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. This strategic decision comes in response to the growing demand for high-quality sofas in the Japanese market. Having been imported exclusively into Japan through Actus, a Tokyo-based interior company, Eilersen's products have been appreciated for over three decades.
Background of Eilersen
Founded in 1895, Eilersen initially specialized in crafting robust yet lightweight bodies for horse carriages. Over the years, the brand has evolved into a leading high-quality furniture maker, lauded for its exceptional craftsmanship and timeless design. As a global sofa brand representing Nordic values, Eilersen continues to enhance comfort and style across homes worldwide.
Reasons Behind Choosing Asahikawa
Japan stands as an essential market for Eilersen, due to its increasing appetite for high-quality furniture. Among numerous potential locations, Asahikawa was selected for its rich woodcraft heritage and the presence of skilled artisans committed to the industry. The city actively fosters the development of the next generation of craftsmen, aligning with Eilersen’s values of quality and tradition.
In alignment with this project, Eilersen plans to establish Eilersen Japan LLC within Asahikawa by February 2025, signifying a long-term commitment to the region and its industrial framework.
Factory Overview and Future Prospects
The new factory is slated to be built on the site of the former Chiyokubo Primary School, conveniently located adjacent to Asahikawa Airport. Set to commence operations by the summer of 2026, the facility aims to create approximately 100 jobs over the next two to three years, ensuring that the high standards of quality and service Eilersen is known for can be consistently delivered within Japan.
Spanning approximately 28,300 square meters, the facility will repurpose the existing school buildings into furniture manufacturing spaces, with plans for additional production units as demand grows. Initial renovations are expected to require a substantial investment of several hundred million yen, marking this project as a vital capital investment for Eilersen.
