On September 19, a significant day designated as "#ConsiderParentalLeave Day" in Japan, Spice Factory Inc. publicly announced its involvement in supporting the "Child Smiles Movement" initiated by the Tokyo government. Spice Factory, headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, is committed to the principles of the Japan Decent Work 8 (JD8) indicators. The company's focus on investing in human capital and improving information disclosure aligns with its mission of creating a work environment where employees, their families, and partners feel secure and can grow. The company achieved an impressive parental leave uptake rate of 85.7% for its employees in 2024, showing that nearly all who needed parental leave utilized it.

Insights from Male Employees Taking Paternity Leave


Among those who have experienced paternity leave is Keigo Hirayama, General Manager of the Digital Service Development Division. He shared his thoughts on his forthcoming leave from August 19, 2024, to January 10, 2025, a duration of approximately five months. He confessed to feelings of anxiety regarding how to maintain workflow while he was away, especially considering his leadership position. Nonetheless, he recognized the need to set a precedent in the company as more employees are expected to navigate life transitions in the future.

Upon his return, he noticed an increased pressure of time and priorities, emphasizing the necessity of understanding from both the company and family. Hirayama firmly believes that a culture promoting sustainability in the workplace, coupled with an appreciation for work-life balance, will ultimately serve as a firm foundation for parenting support.

Yasushi Morita, a team leader within the same division, echoed Hirayama's sentiments as he prepares for his paternity leave starting July 1, 2025. Morita highlights the low psychological barrier he faced, thanks to his supervisor's recent leave, but feels a sense of obligation toward his colleagues who will take on his responsibilities. He views his upcoming leave as not just a break but rather an opportunity to reflect on long-term career and personal balance.

The feedback from both Hirayama and Morita underscores the importance of family time while also acknowledging the potential challenges that arise, including differences in values highlighted through shared parenting experiences. They both note that taking parental leave has enriched their family relationships, and Morita specifically emphasizes the joy of witnessing his child's growth firsthand.

Spice Factory's Initiatives to Promote Parenting Support


1. Premama & Papa Program (Launched July 2023): This initiative allows expectant parents to take up to 20 days of special paid leave prior to statutory maternity leave. This program addresses the challenges surrounding parental leave that existing policies failed to cover, such as pregnancy-related issues and medical check-ups.

2. Expansion of Wellness Leave (Starting April 2025): Aligning with revisions to the childcare leave law, the company will broaden the use of paid special leave to cover care for family members and pets, enhancing employee support in times of personal need.

3. Flexible Work Arrangements: The hybrid work system supports an optimal balance of remote work and office presence, alongside flexible hours to cater to individual rhythms. This system includes a siesta policy to encourage breaks based on personal needs, fostering a productive work environment.
