McDonald's and Gen.G Launch NEXTGEN Club Challenge for SoCal Students
McDonald's and Gen.G Unite for the NEXTGEN Club Challenge
In an exciting development for college students in Southern California, McDonald's of Southern California has teamed up with the global esports organization Gen.G to launch the inaugural NEXTGEN Club Challenge. This initiative aims to foster creativity and philanthropy among student organizations at four participating universities: the University of California, Riverside (Highlander Gaming), California State University, Long Beach (CSULB Esports Association), California State University, Fullerton (CSUF Gaming Esports), and San Diego State University (Aztec Gaming).
The NEXTGEN Club Challenge is not just a competition; it serves as a platform for students to gain mentorship and resources to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California (RMHCSC). Through this program, selected student organizations will each receive an allocated budget and will have the opportunity to host a significant event aimed at fundraising for the charity. The organization that raises the most funds will not only gain recognition but will also receive sponsorship support from McDonald's for their next major event on campus.
Arnold Hur, CEO of Gen.G, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, "Once again, we have partnered with McDonald's SoCal to deliver another innovative program that leverages gaming to empower students." The goal is to not only encourage fundraising but to unite the student body and enhance the collegiate experience across the region.
To ensure the success of the participating organizations, club leaders will meet biweekly with Gen.G representatives. These meetings will focus on progress, strategies to overcome challenges, and effective marketing for their events. Additionally, McDonald's will offer guidance on leadership skills and career paths, further enriching the students’ experiences. Moreover, at the conclusion of the program, participants will receive certification as part of an accredited program, a stipend to support their fundraising efforts, and vital event-planning skills.
Stephanie Yuen, a franchisee of McDonald's in Southern California, shared her perspective on the partnership. "Gaming is just one way we connect with our fans. Over the past six years of partnering with Gen.G, we've continued to push boundaries. The NEXTGEN Club Challenge is the next step in giving college students the chance to test their creativity and fuel their passion for gaming."
The fundraising events initiated by the student organizations will take place both on campus and virtually, running through January 31, 2026. Winners will be announced in early February, leading to a flagship event in April sponsored by McDonald's. This event will feature giveaways, mentorship for leaders, promotion on social media, guest speakers, and recruiting opportunities.
Community Impact Through Gaming
The presidents of the participating organizations reflected on their motives to engage in this initiative. Corinna Nguyen, president of CSULB Esports Association, highlighted the importance of belonging in gaming culture, stating, "The NEXTGEN Club Challenge program sheds light on how gaming is a space for everyone to get a sense of belonging." Similarly, Kadell Washington of Highlander Gaming emphasized their commitment to not only compete but to build a community that gives back.
Raul Paz, president of CSUF Gaming Esports, shared his enthusiasm about seeing students and the community come together for a charitable cause, while Jade Reynolds from Aztec Gaming pointed out the broader impact they aim to have in the San Diego area through their collaboration with RMHCSC.
In summary, the NEXTGEN Club Challenge is set to redefine how students interact with their communities while engaging in their passions. By blending gaming with philanthropy, McDonald's and Gen.G are empowering the next generation of leaders to make a positive change in their surroundings, proving that gaming can be a powerful tool for good.
As the challenge unfolds, the excitement builds not just among the participants but within the entire Southern California community, eagerly anticipating the innovative event concepts that will emerge from this collaboration.
