Preventing Water Accidents: Experiential Training for Children at Pools and Rivers

Enhancing Water Safety: Training for Kids and Parents

As the summer season kicks off, tragic water accidents have already started to make headlines across the nation. Drowning incidents, particularly among children under middle school age, account for a staggering 66.7% of all water-related deaths and disappearances, with rivers being the most common location for such events at 61.1% according to the National Police Agency's report. This reality emphasizes the urgent need for preventive measures against water dangers, especially for young children.

In light of this pressing issue, the Tokyo branch of the Japanese Red Cross is implementing a series of experiential training sessions focused on preventing water-related accidents. These classes are specifically designed for elementary school students and educators, aiming to equip them with the skills and knowledge to respond effectively in emergencies while enjoying summer activities by the water.

Training Programs and Their Objectives

The training sessions will feature various components aimed at educating participants about water safety:

  • - Clothed Swimming Training for Educators
Date: July 2, 2023
Time: 14:00 - 15:30
Location: Higashikanamachi Elementary School, Katsushika Ward

Educators will learn the differences between swimming in swimwear versus regular clothing. They will practice techniques to maintain buoyancy and breathing while fully dressed, including the use of floating aids. The training includes practical demonstrations on how to rescue someone in distress using nearby objects like sticks or clothing.

  • - Clothed Swimming Training for Students
Date: July 15, 2023
Time: 08:45 - 12:15
Location: Fujimidai Elementary School, Toshima Ward

Students will participate in similar practical exercises tailored to their age group, enhancing their understanding of swimming safety while fully clothed as opposed to in their swimsuits.

  • - River Safety Training for Families
Date: July 19, 2023
Time: 10:40 - 13:00
Location: Kamanofuchi Park, Ome City

The final session is family-oriented, teaching crucial skills such as how to stay safe in a flowing river. Participants will be instructed on how to position themselves if swept away by the current, the importance of wearing life jackets, and practical methods to rescue individuals in distress.

With summer break approaching, this is a critical time for public awareness regarding water safety for children. We kindly invite journalists and media outlets to cover these life-saving training sessions.
