Novotel Celebrates One Year of Sustainability with WWF for Ocean Conservation

Novotel Celebrates a Year of Ocean Commitment with WWF

As the world gears up for World Ocean Day on June 8, 2025, Novotel proudly commemorates the first anniversary of its transformative partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). This collaboration, spanning three years, has been pivotal in Novotel's quest to prioritize ocean conservation. The hotel chain is excited to launch two new initiatives aimed at making a significant impact on marine life and sustainable dining options across its 600 hotels globally.

A Commitment to Protect Our Oceans

Jean-Yves Minet, the Novotel Global Brand President, expressed deep gratitude for the partnership, stating, "At Novotel, we are taking decisive action to protect our oceans. The partnership with WWF is a driving force behind this commitment." With WWF's guidance, Novotel has implemented strategies to promote responsible sourcing, reflecting a dedication to fostering sustainable practices in hospitality.

Sustainable Seafood Principles

Through a collaborative effort with WWF France, Novotel has introduced its Sustainable Seafood Principles. This guideline includes a comprehensive approach to seafood sourcing: banning 350 species of endangered seafood, opting for Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified wild-caught species, and using responsibly farmed seafood for its salmon and shrimp. By 2027, Novotel aims to serve only sustainable seafood options while collaborating closely with suppliers to ensure traceability.

To further equip its staff, Novotel has established the Sustainable Seafood Training, a global initiative aimed at educating chefs and procurement teams about sustainable sourcing practices and the critical status of fish stocks worldwide.

Plant-Forward Food Ambition

Alongside sustainable seafood practices, Novotel is proud to introduce a Plant-Forward ambition, targeting a minimum of 25% plant-based menu offerings in all its hotels by 2026. Currently, 39% of Novotel hotels have already embraced this initiative, ensuring that guests have access to healthy and sustainable dining. By leveraging culinary expertise, Novotel is determined to lead the way in offering mouthwatering plant-based dishes that benefit both customers and the environment.

Educating the Next Generation

With family stays exceeding two million annually, Novotel recognizes the importance of inspiring the younger generation. During the summer, families can participate in fun educational games developed in partnership with WWF France, such as Guardians of the Mediterranean and Sea Turtle. These initiatives are perfect for engaging kids in ocean conservation efforts while enjoying their stay.

Jean-Yves Minet emphasizes that fostering awareness and empathy towards marine life among children is essential. “By engaging young minds through play, we plant the seeds for a healthy future,” he states, highlighting Novotel’s commitment to serving as a champion for ocean sustainability.

Progress Achieved Thus Far

Since launching its ocean preservation initiatives in June 2024, Novotel has made significant progress in various areas:
1. Reducing Impact: Novotel has begun eliminating single-use plastics, implementing refillable dispensers, and initiating food waste minimization strategies. They are also piloting microplastic filters in select hotels.
2. Sustainable Food Choices: The hotel chain launched a Fishery Improvement Project in collaboration with WWF, supporting sustainable fishing practices across various regions.
3. Enhancing Education and Awareness: New global training programs for hotel teams and chefs aim to inspire a deeper understanding of ocean preservation.
4. Supporting Research and Innovation: Novotel is backing critical conservation projects, investing in research to protect marine ecosystems.

Current initiatives include protecting Posidonia seagrass in the Mediterranean, retrieving ghost fishing gear, and advocating for marine turtle conservation across the globe. These efforts showcase Novotel’s dedication to integrating sustainability into its core operations.

The Road Ahead for Novotel

Looking ahead, Novotel plans to further amplify its ocean preservation efforts. Upcoming initiatives include collaborating with leading industry figures during the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, enhancing sustainable seafood practices across all locations, and launching new ocean awareness training programs. The hotel brand is committed to providing its guests with engaging, eco-conscious experiences while fostering a culture of sustainability within the hospitality sector.
