Transformative Adventure for Children with Down Syndrome in Honolulu
In a groundbreaking initiative, Down Up Co., Ltd. has unveiled an exciting opportunity for children with Down syndrome and their parents. The project, titled "Dreams Can Change the Future - 8-Day Honolulu Tour," invites participants to explore the beauty of Hawaii while engaging in enriching activities such as a marathon, school visits, and interactions with local communities. This tour aims to instill confidence and motivation in children with Down syndrome through their first-ever experiences in an encouraging environment.
Special Guests and Ambassadors
Accompanying the participants will be popular Down syndrome talent, Abe Kenta, who will provide enthusiasm and support throughout the journey. Joining him as support ambassadors are actress and dancer Aoi Yoshida and Kenji Ramirez, son of former professional baseball player Alex Ramirez. Together, they will run alongside participants in the Honolulu Marathon, specifically in the 1-mile and 10k courses, while also visiting local schools.
A Glimpse into the Project
Launched on August 8, the project is designed for two children with Down syndrome aged 6 to 18, along with their two accompanying parents. This all-expenses-paid tour covers flights, accommodation, and marathon entry fees, ensuring a truly unforgettable experience for both children and their families. Participants will depart from Japan on December 11, 2025, and return on December 19, after an 8-day journey filled with remarkable adventures and interactive educational experiences.
The initiative not only focuses on building the children's self-esteem through participation in the Honolulu Marathon but also emphasizes the importance of inclusive education. Participants will engage with local community members and educational professionals, further broadening their horizons through first-hand experiences in Hawaii's educational environment.
Educational Advocacy Efforts
Upon returning to Japan, participants will compile their insights from the tour in a proposal to be submitted to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology on World Down Syndrome Day (March 21) in 2026. This advocacy aims to prompt discussions around inclusive education styles in Japan, ensuring that children with disabilities can thrive in supportive environments.
Some proposed suggestions include:
- - Establishing legal frameworks for creating collaborative learning environments.
- - Permanent support roles for special education coordinators to assist children with disabilities in school.
- - Making inclusive education a mandatory part of teacher training programs.
In Hawaii, children with disabilities often have the opportunity to learn in general education classrooms, receiving tailored support as outlined in disability education improvement laws. This tour is a chance for participants to experience such inclusive education firsthand and to foster understanding amongst the local community.
Competing in the Marathon
Abe Kenta, who famously completed a full marathon last year in 9 hours and 47 minutes, is taking this mental and physical challenge to the next level. Alongside his brother, he will engage in a unique "brotherly bond run" at the Karakaua Miracle Mile, striving for a Guinness World Record with his two-legged race strategy.
