Kevin Simmons: A Heartfelt Journey with a Kind Beard
In a remarkable showcase of community spirit and compassion,
Kevin Simmons, a pediatric speech pathologist from Gainesville, Georgia, has earned a spot among the
finalists for the Wahl® Benevolent Beards Contest. This contest recognizes men who are not just dedicated to their grooming but are also committed to making a positive impact in their communities.
Kevin, who also volunteers as a sensory barber through the charity
ConnectAbility, has seen firsthand the vital support this organization provides to individuals with disabilities and their families. Understanding the often stressful experience many children face during haircuts, he offers a calming and enjoyable haircutting experience designed for those with sensory sensitivities.
The Contest
The Wahl Benevolent Beards Contest celebrates exceptional bearded individuals who give back to their communities. Kevin's nomination celebrates his unique ability to blend professional grooming with profound charitable work. The winner, decided by public vote, will receive
$5,000 for themselves and $20,000 for their chosen charity. Additionally, they will be honored with the title of ‘
Wahl® Man of the Year’, reflecting their commitment to community and charity.
Voting is open until
September 12, 2025, and supporters can cast their votes online for their favorite finalist.
A Glimpse Into Kevin’s Giving Spirit
What sets Kevin apart is his authentic connection to the children he serves. Many of the kids he treats are also beneficiaries of ConnectAbility, a charity focusing on enhancing the lives of those with disabilities. By providing sensory-friendly haircuts, he helps alleviate anxiety associated with traditional hair-cutting practices, creating a comfortable environment where children can feel at ease.
Kevin's story is not an isolated one; he stands alongside four other incredible finalists, each with their own inspiring tales of service and community improvement:
1.
Miguel Delvalle from
Hartford, CT: After overcoming homelessness, Miguel opened his barbershop and initiated the
No Hair Left Behind event, which offers free haircuts to those in need.
2.
Darren Thompson from
Washington, D.C.: Determined to make his community better, Darren established the
East River Dog Park Group, which not only created a dog park but also engaged the community in various service projects.
3.
Jesse Presson from
Charlottesville, VA: A U.S. Army veteran, Jesse advocates for
hyperbaric oxygen therapy accessibility for veterans, transforming his traumatic military experiences into empowerment for others.
4.
Ryan Saunders from
Seattle, WA: As the managing director of the
National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY), Ryan fosters connections among young filmmakers from diverse backgrounds, aiming for inclusivity in the film industry.
Why This Matters
The Wahl Benevolent Beards Contest not only promotes a spirit of goodwill but also encourages men to share their grooming journey alongside their contributions to meaningful causes. This year marks the fourth edition of the contest, aiming to illuminate the numerous charitable efforts led by bearded gentlemen all across America. Entrants submitted videos demonstrating how they support their chosen charities, which had to be certified 501(c)(3) organizations.
Wahl is committed to highlighting individuals like Kevin Simmons, who embody the essence of making the world a better place with their beards and their hearts.
If you'd like to support Kevin and his charity, you can vote at
