Shibuya's Initiative for the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics
In preparation for the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics, Shibuya Ward, led by Mayor Ken Hasebe, is introducing a series of communication courses aimed at promoting inclusivity for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. These courses will provide participants with skills in sign language and various communication methods to engage with the deaf community effectively. The initiative also forms part of the Shibuya Sports Volunteer Development Support Project, aligned with the ward's efforts to create a vibrant atmosphere for the upcoming international event.
Course Details
The upcoming courses are designed not only to teach sign language but also to enable participants to experience communication beyond sound through group activities. This holistic approach ensures that individuals with varying levels of experience—ranging from beginners to those more familiar with sign language—can participate and learn in a supportive environment. Participants will also have the chance to engage in hands-on activities that enhance their understanding of non-verbal communication.
The program will feature Ichiro Hashimoto, a qualified sign language interpreter, as the primary instructor. He brings a wealth of experience and insight to the courses, ensuring that all participants will gain valuable knowledge. Moreover, as a special highlight, the renowned track and field athlete Maki Yamada, a member of the Japanese national team selected for the Deaflympics, will be present as a guest speaker. This event promises to offer a unique opportunity for interaction, learning, and inspiration.
