Empowering Communication Through Colors: COCOLON Workshop on August 24 in Tokyo

COCOLON's Color Education Workshop: Join Us in Tokyo!

On August 24, 2025, COCOLON is set to host a unique workshop dedicated to families and supporters of children with severe disabilities in Tokyo. This initiative is organized by the non-profit organization EPO, headed by Erika Saito. The workshop aims to explore innovative ways of communication, particularly for children who face challenges in expressing themselves through words.

This workshop is a continuation of COCOLON's commitment to providing educational resources and recreational activities for families and supporters of individuals with profound disabilities. In July, COCOLON held a successful seminar where participants learned how to incorporate colors into daily parenting through engaging activities like card games and origami. The upcoming workshop, titled Color Water Experiment, will lean more towards hands-on experiences. Participants will engage in exciting activities like creating colored water and slime, allowing children to play while adults learn valuable techniques for fostering communication.

For those who missed the previous seminar or are new to color education, this workshop welcomes everyone. Attendees will discover how to integrate colors into their parenting and learn about the Kashiko-style verbal communication technique. This method focuses on expressing feelings, visual elements, and actions in a straightforward manner, which can significantly enhance interactions with children who have severe disabilities.

Meet the Instructor

The workshop will be led by a mother of two, an 8-year-old and a 4-year-old, whose eldest son has severe disabilities due to an early childhood accident. Struggling with feelings of helplessness, she discovered “color education” as a transformative method to engage with her son effectively.

Through learning about color education, she has gained confidence in her interactions with her children, realizing that her approach directly contributes to her son's development. Initially intended for her eldest, this practice has incredibly benefited her younger son as well. Now, she wholeheartedly enjoys parenting both her son with severe disabilities and his typically developing brother, aiming to share the knowledge of color education with other caregivers feeling anxious or facing developmental challenges with their children.
