Sungrow Discusses European Energy Transition Insights at BNEF London Summit

Sungrow's Insights on Energy Transition at BNEF London Summit

In the face of mounting energy transition demands across Europe, characterized by deeper electrification and more intelligent grid integration, Sungrow has stepped forward as a key contributor to the dialogue. The prominent global supplier of photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems took center stage at the BloombergNEF (BNEF) Summit in London. The discourse primarily revolved around the critical roles of clean technology manufacturing, localization, and energy storage in ensuring a secure, affordable, and resilient energy transition.

Commitment to Europe's Energy Future

During his opening remarks, Shawn Shi, President of Sungrow Europe, reiterated the firm’s commitment to supporting the evolving energy landscape in Europe. He asserted that the energy transition must not only focus on enhancing renewable energy production capabilities but also prioritize the establishment of a safe, resilient, and reliable power system. This sentiment echoed a broader understanding that the success of the transition hinges on three factors: localization, trust, and network reliability.

Since establishing its footprint in Europe in 2011, Sungrow has built a strong local presence, employing over 900 staff, nearly all recruited locally. The planned 230 million euro manufacturing facility in Poland, set to commence production in 2027, will further bring production closer to customers, enhancing supply chain resilience.

Shawn emphasized the growing importance of cybersecurity, energy data asset management, and collaboration with European suppliers, installers, and developers. He articulated that as the share of renewable energy increases, the necessity for energy storage will also escalate, becoming pivotal for both network stability and system resilience. "The transition in Europe won’t be secured merely by increased capacity. There needs to be sufficient local capability to provide support, reliability to ensure connectivity, and robustness to maintain network dependability," Shawn insisted.

Navigating the Clean Technology Industry in Europe

Javier, Vice President of Sungrow Europe, participated in a panel discussion titled “Made in Europe: What Should Europe Fight to Keep?” This session gathered industry leaders, financiers, and policymakers to discuss how Europe can strengthen its clean technology manufacturing base, preserve industrial expertise, and balance localization policies with global supply chain cooperation to remain competitive in the energy transition.

The discussion delved into how local content requirements and industrial policies can stimulate investment while being mindful of production realities, project costs, and deployment timelines. Key conditions for fostering a competitive European clean technology industry were highlighted, including predictable regulations, a skilled workforce, efficient authorization processes, innovation, and robust local supply chains.

Technology, Innovation, and Investment

During a thematic lunch hosted by Sungrow on “The Outlook for BESS in Europe: How Technology Shapes Investment and Project Development,” James Li, Vice President of Sungrow Europe, joined industry leaders like Erik Stromso, CEO of BW ESS; Sonia Dunlop, CEO of the Global Solar Council; and Jordi Francesch, Head of Clean Energy at Nuveen Infrastructure. They explored key trends, challenges, and innovations shaping the European battery energy storage system (BESS) market.

Conversations focused on the evolving policies, regulatory security, and the crucial role of storage in enhancing grid flexibility and system resilience. Strategies for securing projects and attracting institutional capital were also discussed. The dialogue underscored the importance of looking beyond initial costs when assessing investments in energy storage, highlighting lifetime performance, operational reliability, and technical support as pivotal for project profitability and investor confidence. Advanced technologies, such as grid-forming capabilities and autonomous restart functionalities, were also noted for their potential to significantly enhance the operational resilience and flexibility of electric systems.

Through its engagement at the summit and thematic lunch, Sungrow reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with European stakeholders to propel clean energy deployment, fortify local capabilities, and support a reliable power system.
