Energy Fuels' Donald Project Secures Significant Government Financing to Advance Rare Earth Mineral Production

Energy Fuels' Donald Rare Earth and Mineral Sands Project

Energy Fuels Inc. has taken a significant step in advancing its Donald Rare Earth and Mineral Sands Project, located approximately 300 kilometers northwest of Melbourne, Australia. The company recently announced with great excitement that it has received conditional credit approval up to A$180 million (around US$126 million) from Export Finance Australia (EFA) and the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC). This funding is part of a larger proposed senior project finance debt facility totaling A$200 million, which is essential for the construction of Phase 1 of the Donald Project.

The approval marks a pivotal moment for Energy Fuels, as it aims to become a leading producer of rare earth elements (REE), uranium, and other critical materials. The financial commitment is subject to several prerequisites, including the satisfaction of due diligence, completion of definitive documentation, and securing remaining funds from commercial lenders, with the final investment decision (FID) targeted for late 2026. This milestone follows a large loan commitment of $725 million received from the U.S. Office of Strategic Capital earlier in 2026.

"This financing milestone brings the Donald Project closer to an FID and fortifies our mine-to-magnet supply chain strategy," stated Ross Bhappu, President and CEO of Energy Fuels. He emphasized the project’s capacity to produce significant volumes of monazite and xenotime, which are critical for high-performance permanent magnets used in advanced technologies.

Overview of the Donald Project

The Donald Project, a joint venture between Energy Fuels and Australia's Astron Limited, is fully permitted and ready for development. Upon commissioning, Phase 1 is expected to yield approximately 9,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of rare earth element concentrate (REEC) containing vital components such as neodymium, praseodymium, terbium, and dysprosium. Additionally, it will generate a heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) comprising zircon and titanium dioxide materials, with a projected mine life of 40 years.

The project's long-term vision is to integrate the REE production into Energy Fuels' overarching supply chain strategy. Bhappu highlighted, "Donald will not only support our processing capabilities but will also enhance our position as a vertically integrated supplier of rare earths essential for the green energy transition."

Integrating Supply Chain

Energy Fuels plans to process the REEC from the Donald Project at its White Mesa Mill located in Utah, turning it into high-value products such as NdPr oxide, terbium, and dysprosium oxides. The mill's current capacity allows for processing up to 10,000 tpa of REEC, making it key in supplying necessary materials for the company's expansive plans in magnet manufacturing.

The company is also undertaking an exciting endeavor at its facilities in South Korea and through its forthcoming American Metals Plant. These plants are set to use the produced REE oxides to create neodymium-iron-boron alloys, a crucial component for magnets. The anticipated output from the Donald Project is expected to support a substantial portion of their alloy requirements, thus strengthening their operational capabilities.

Future Outlook

The investment into the Donald Project underscores Energy Fuels' commitment to leading the rare earth industry. As the global demand for rare earth materials rises, particularly for use in clean energy technologies, this project positions the company favorably in the evolving market landscape. Bhappu remained optimistic: “The Donald Project represents not just an operational milestone but a commitment to advancing the usage of critical minerals in sustainable technologies.”

As they move forward with project financing and development, stakeholders and investors are closely watching to see how Energy Fuels navigates this transformative juncture in the rare earth sector. With the potential for the Donald Project to significantly impact the supply chain,Energy Fuels is poised to play a pivotal role in meeting global rare earth demand.
