Golden Haiku Competition Brings Spring Spirit to Downtown DC
As the streets of Washington, DC begin to shake off the remnants of winter, the celebrated Golden Triangle Business Improvement District (BID) has unveiled the results of its 13th annual Golden Haiku competition. This year, the inspiring theme was "The Joy of Nature," drawing poetry submissions from an astonishing
90+ countries around the globe, setting a new record for international entries.
Celebrating Global Voices
In a remarkable artistic expression, the competition welcomed nearly
5,000 haiku crafted by over
2,600 poets, who contributed their unique reflections from all corners of the United States, including DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands, alongside a vast array of international entries. This overwhelming participation underscores the universal appeal of nature and its various interpretations through the lens of poetry.
The first place in this year's competition went to
John Pappas from Boston, whose poignant piece masterfully encapsulates the silence of winter nights through a nostalgic melody:
night snow
the hiss and pop
of an old LP
Such evocative imagery and sound bring to mind the stillness of the season while hinting at the music of life that's constantly playing, waiting for spring to approach.
Poetic Installations Across the Neighborhood
With the onset of spring, residents and visitors can now witness the colorful display of over
200 haiku signs arranged in tree box gardens throughout the Golden Triangle neighborhood, inviting everyone to engage with poetry as they stroll. This artistic initiative has been curated with care by a panel of haiku experts dedicated to celebrating the essence of poetic expression.
Leona Agouridis, the President and CEO of the Golden Triangle BID, expressed her excitement about the event:
"Haiku popping up each year in the Golden Triangle is a sure sign that spring is on the way. It brings a smile to people's faces when they step outside into warmer weather and are greeted by hundreds of haiku signs around the neighborhood.”
This year’s collection of haiku reflects a vibrant tapestry of creative voices, fostering connections and appreciation for nature in an urban landscape. It is a fitting tribute to the Golden Triangle, an evolving neighborhood filled with public art and situated near significant international institutions in the heart of DC's downtown.
