Honoring Business Champions in Orange County
In an inspiring event held on October 28, 2026, the Regional Center of Orange County (RCOC) recognized seven local businesses for their commitment to employing individuals with developmental disabilities. These businesses are role models for inclusivity and showcase the positive impact that diverse workforces can have on communities.
The Honorees
The following businesses were honored:
- - Discovery Cube (Santa Ana)
- - Grocery Outlet (Anaheim and Long Beach)
- - Lamppost Pizza (Orange)
- - Oakley (Irvine)
- - Heroes Hall – OC Fairgrounds Event Center (Costa Mesa)
- - Provider Contract Food Services (Fullerton)
- - Walgreens (Anaheim)
Decades ago, finding employment as a person with a developmental disability was a significant challenge. Many were confined to what were termed "sheltered workshops", environments isolated from the community, which provided work primarily for adults with disabilities. Today, the paradigm has shifted significantly. Larry Landauer, Executive Director of RCOC, remarked, "We now take for granted that people with disabilities can and should work alongside their non-disabled peers. However, those we serve still face numerous challenges, making it essential to recognize exemplary employers who understand the benefits of including individuals with developmental disabilities in their workforce."
The Journey to Inclusion
To promote inclusive employment practices, the RCOC’s board adopted an Employment First policy years ago. This policy prioritizes competitive, integrated employment for working-age adults served by the center. This aligns with state policies advocating for inclusive job opportunities.
The RCOC collaborates with businesses of all sizes, community organizations, and government agencies across Orange County to create job opportunities. They connect the skills, talents, capabilities, and interests of individuals with developmental disabilities to suitable jobs. This initiative not only benefits employees but also enriches workplaces, fostering a culture of diversity and acceptance.
Recognition and Support
During the recognition ceremony, honorees received certificates from several Assembly members, including Diane Dixon, Cottie Petrie-Norris, and Avelino Valencia. This acknowledgment underscores the importance of legislative support for inclusive employment practices.
For businesses interested in the advantages of hiring adults with developmental disabilities, the RCOC offers valuable resources through its Employment First and Employment for People with Developmental Disabilities web pages. These resources help employers understand the services and support available to assist in creating inclusive workplaces.
