Zambia's Ministry of Technology and Huawei Unveil Global Smart Village Initiative at MWC 2025

The Global Smart Village Initiative: A Collaborative Effort by Zambia and Huawei

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, a significant milestone was reached in the realm of digital transformation for rural areas when Zambia's Ministry of Technology and Huawei launched the global Smart Village Showcase. This initiative aims to accelerate national digitalization through a secure, autonomous, and synergistic network-cloud strategy. Over 200 industry leaders and technical experts gathered to discuss pathways for supporting national transformation through digital technologies.

During the launch event, key figures took the stage, including Felix C. Mutati, the Minister of Technology and Science of Zambia, and Li Junfeng, Vice President of Huawei and CEO of the Global Public Sector Business Unit. They emphasized the critical role of governmental digital transformation in enhancing national capabilities and improving citizens' welfare. According to Li, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a driving force behind this transformation, representing not only technological advancement but also a paradigm shift in production dynamics.

In July 2024, Zambia successfully handed over its first smart village site after just 30 days of construction. This project has significantly impacted local communities by providing essential electricity and internet access while also integrating telemedicine and remote education into village life. Such initiatives reflect a broader global trend as governments increasingly pivot towards AI-driven smart public service enhancements.

The forum featured discussions led by Koh Hong-Eng, Huawei's Chief Scientist for Global Public Services. He brought together various stakeholders to engage in conversations on national digital transformation. In his speech, Minister Mutati noted that the Smart Villages Project is perfectly aligned with Zambia's vision for 2030. The initiative not only seeks to empower the younger generation with knowledge but also equips them with digital skills necessary for thriving in the fourth industrial revolution.

Zambia's push for digital transformation is not just about technology; it centers on people, progress, and potential. The initiative aims to strengthen communities, address inequality, and foster a future where every Zambian can contribute meaningfully to national development. Huawei is committed to this vision through continuous expansion of business scenarios and the widespread implementation of digital technologies in government, striving towards a model of governance that is equitable, efficient, and sustainable.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Zambia's Ministry of Technology and Huawei heralds a new era in digital transformation for rural areas. By leveraging AI and digital technologies, this initiative promises to build smarter, more sustainable communities while enhancing the overall quality of life for Zambians. The countdown to a more connected and prosperous future has begun, making the Smart Village initiative a critical component of Zambia's development agenda.
