Insights from the 2025 Love and Marriage Survey
The 2025 Love and Marriage Awareness Survey conducted by Linkbal Inc., known for their efforts in fostering social connections, explores the attitudes and realities surrounding love and marriage among the younger generations in Japan. This survey highlights some intriguing trends in the relationship dynamics, particularly among Generation Z and young adults aged 25 to 29.
Survey Overview
Carried out from December 9 to December 22, 2024, the survey was completed by 2,280 participants across two platforms, CoupLink and Pairy. The findings reveal a mixed perspective on romantic relationships, marriage ambitions, and financial expectations among singles and those currently dating.
Satisfaction with Current Living Conditions
Interestingly, many participants express satisfaction with their current lifestyle. Approximately 40% of respondents live alone, while the rest cohabit with family or friends. Among individuals aged 25-29, 83.5% were optimistic about marriage, though this figure showed a decline of 7.5 percentage points from the previous year.
Trends in Romantic Relationships
The survey indicates a growing trend towards online dating among the younger population, particularly those in their 30s, who primarily engage with matching apps. An overwhelming 57.8% of users allocate fewer than 5,000 yen monthly for dating services. Notably, nearly a quarter (24.1%) of single individuals reported having no dating experience.
The top three ideal marriage ages identified were 30 (17%), 35 (11.3%), and both 28 and 40 (7.4%). Furthermore, workplace encounters remain the most common way for singles to meet partners, with matching apps ranking third. However, significant concerns persist regarding potential partners, with 23.7% of respondents indicating the lack of opportunities to meet new people as their primary worry.
Financial Expectations in Relationships
Financial stability continues to play a crucial role in partner selection. Many respondents emphasized the necessity for economic power in a potential spouse, with single women preferring partners with a minimum annual income of 4 million yen. Compared to previous year's data, there's seen a slight increase in those aiming for partners earning 5 million yen or more.
Visions for Parenthood
The enthusiasm for parenthood shows mild growth among Gen Z and individuals aged 25-29, now at 64%. However, the percentage of married or dating individuals indicating a desire to have children has dropped by 11.1 points compared to last year, signaling shifting attitudes. Over half of currently married individuals in relationships identified as dual-income households.
