National Grid Foundation Launches Youth Advisory Council to Empower Young Leaders
Empowering Future Leaders: National Grid Foundation's Inaugural Youth Advisory Council
On November 20, 2025, the National Grid Foundation made a significant stride towards community engagement and support for youth by establishing its first Youth Advisory Council (YAC). This innovative initiative is designed to elevate the perspectives of young leaders from New York and Massachusetts, enabling them to drive impactful social change, particularly in the fields of STEM education and literacy.
A New Approach to Leadership
The YAC comprises twelve exceptional individuals aged 18-25, each chosen for their strong commitment to civic responsibility and community empowerment. Robert Simmons, Executive Director of the National Grid Foundation, emphasized the importance of these young leaders, stating that their insights would be pivotal in guiding the Foundation's social impact initiatives. “This accomplished group embodies the spirit of philanthropy and community engagement,” he remarked.
Participating members of the YAC will convene virtually four times each year over a two-year term to engage in meaningful discussions. The sessions will focus on leadership development and philanthropy, facilitated by board members, employees, and community advocates from the Foundation.
In acknowledgment of their contributions, YAC members will receive stipends for their time and expertise, further underscoring the value that the Foundation places on youth involvement.

Foundation's Commitment to Community Engagement
The establishment of the YAC aligns with the National Grid Foundation's mission since its formation in December 1998 to improve the quality of life in its operating areas. The Foundation has invested over $43 million in grants to promote educational and environmental solutions, particularly in STEM.
The YAC will further the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to creating opportunities that empower youth, supporting National Grid’s Grid for Good community engagement initiative. This initiative focuses on providing access to affordable energy, enhancing workforce development in the energy sector, and fostering community resilience.
In summary, the National Grid Foundation's YAC is a forward-thinking approach that not only acknowledges the importance of youth voices but also actively involves them in the shaping of programs that impact their lives and communities. As they prepare to embark on this exciting journey in January 2026, the Foundation positions itself as a leader in youth empowerment and social responsibility.
