Huawei DigiTruck Kenya Celebrates Graduates
On March 17, 2025, Huawei DigiTruck Kenya celebrated a milestone achievement in Homa Bay with the graduation of 290 young individuals, who successfully completed a six-week training program aimed at enhancing their digital skills. This initiative is part of the Huawei TECH4ALL effort, which focuses on digital inclusion and empowerment.
The digital skills acquired include essential areas such as computer literacy, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and cybersecurity. These competencies have become vital in today’s technology-driven economy, with Dr. Raymond Omollo, the Chief Secretary for the Ministry of Internal Security and National Administration in Kenya, emphasizing that digital skills are no longer optional but necessary for anyone looking to succeed in a digital workforce.
The program, which runs through a mobile classroom powered entirely by solar energy, reached underprivileged areas to provide education where it is often less accessible. Equipped with internet access, workstations, and various digital tools, the DigiTruck has been operational since 2019 and has imparted free digital education to over 6,030 young people across 36 counties—making significant strides toward bridging the digital divide in Kenya.
Among the recent graduates, 143 women and 147 men demonstrated their commitment to learning, which aligns with Huawei's goal to foster gender equity. Adam Lane, Huawei’s Director of Government Affairs and Policy, stated that DigiTruck is designed to complement partnerships with universities and colleges, aiming to reach youths beyond traditional education channels. Notably, he pointed out, during the 2024 sessions, 906 out of 1,648 trainees were women, further reflecting the initiative's commitment to inclusivity.
The initiative wasn't just about enhancing knowledge; it also included an innovation competition that challenged trainees to devise practical solutions for community issues. Winners of this contest emerged with innovative digital solutions aimed at improving healthcare services, aiding local miners, and promoting online safety and cyber-awareness.
As the DigiTruck project continues to evolve, expectations are high that these graduates will not only pursue further education in ICT (Information and Communications Technology) but will also widen their entrepreneurial horizons and contribute to the integration of digital technologies into rural areas.
The DigiTruck initiative is one of the 'Skills on Wheels' programs under Huawei’s TECH4ALL project, which by the end of 2024 aims to empower over 110,000 individuals across 20 countries with necessary digital skills and cybersecurity awareness, covering more than 50,000 kilometers. Huawei’s long-term vision through TECH4ALL is to enhance accessibility to digital technologies, fostering inclusivity and sustainable development in the digital realm.
